So what was the secret to getting the avatar to display?

go to tinypic. com and upload the pic from your pc or the site it is on and when you upload it. copy the Direct Link for Layouts Code, and paste it into your profile here at sc net under link to offsite avitar. and it should work. it was really easy. duh.

Make sure first you delete the other image first by checking the box and submit it first.

Thanks! Finally got it set up. Strange that the profile editor allows you the choice of uploading an image directly here but that option doesn't actually work...
