Well I think this video with Stewart Copeland wasn't posted here... he wearing a black t-shirt and drum sounds great...

There is just something about Animal Logic -- forgive me, Stewart -- that I just don't think I'll ever understand. Agreed with BBoy on the bass and the drums, but to put Copeland (!) and Clarke (!) together (!!) and then place them behind songs that are just so . . . average . . .

Again, forgive me, Stewart. Oysterhead, I get. Hell, Curved Air, I get. Had SC and SC gone out together, made it up as they went along, and just generated a slew of weird shit, I'd get it. But with AL I can't help but feel like I'm missing something cuz I really just don't get it.

[ETA: Re-watched that first link -- and there's no denying SC's working it up there. (And SClarke is stuck way off-camera for some reason.) But the BEST part of that song is that very last minute where the lyric is almost over, and SC lets loose.]

Thanks for the link, Jose!

I did the Anilmal Logic homage...went and saw SC and SC in San Jose and at the Hollywood Palladium(?) and loved those shows. The CDs are almost complete shite, but to see them live was a treat! Within the first 2 or 3 songs they had already blown the singer (Holland) offstage and into the first balcony...Stewart was playing to fast and Stanley loved keeping up and it was sick! For just a second I fe;lt bad for that singer, but than I realized she was having her own fun getting out of the way.

'Lopsy Lu' live was jaw dropping. The live recordings of that still kill me -the fact that I was lucky enough to watch that and high five Stew afterwards.

Yeah I was so disappointed with the AL CDs that I avoided them live when it came around...I'm sorry I did!

Yeah It was worth it, barely. But those 3 or 4 songs where they went off were sick! I think it was only $15 or so...I can't remember for sure but it wasn't much. Just to stand 6 feet in front of Stew at the Oasis in San Jose for 90 minutes of heavy artillery was worth it. That guy went through 3 or 4 sticks per song!!!

*quietly admits she really likes AL and even has some of Deborah Holland's solo work*

I guess it's a matter of taste. I do think Stew's drumming is too toned down - especially on the first AL disc - but the second album is actually one of my faves and I listen to it a lot. It's understandable though why it didn't pan out longterm though. I forget where I read or heard this but Stewart even mentioned how they'd be up on stage and Deb would be trying her hardest, and guys in the audience just wanted to hear him and Stanley rip and would literally stand there waving at her to get off the stage.

I can't imagine that being much fun for anyone.

That makes me feel bad for Deborah. She does seem curious choice for two mountains of talent like Stanley and Stew to hide behind. I've put those cd's away for enough years that i'm actually ready to listen to them again, even if it is among Stewart's weaker efforts overall. The live stuff definitely works better.

I absolutely remember people doing that! I forgot about that!
It was terribly embarrasing to watch, but she just didn't make eye contact.
I was pressed right up against the stage so I was 2 feet from her and I couldn't imagine being a dick like that.

Besides, she really did move out of the way for a good number of songs and let them go off!

Eek and egads. That's just horrible.

But in general, for me the thing about AL isn't that I don't like their music -- which I don't, and I admit that. (Forgive me, Stewart.) It's that I don't get the logic (ugh, no pun) behind them. E.g., I openly dislike Rush's music, but I understand Rush and their music, and I understand what it is that draws people to them, even if I'm not one of those people. I could just never figure out how SC and SC -- and the kind of basso, rumbling fabulousness that they could create together -- thought it made sense to get behind Holland and her tunes.

Again, as always, forgive me, Stewart. Holland is probably good at what she does and is also probably a very lovely person. I've just never figured out how that was expected to jibe, I guess. Particularly since the two SCs together created such a powerful rhythm section and generated such intensity live (as people have mentioned). Adding the Holland stuff seemed like volunteering to be manacled. It just boggles my mind somehow.

I think that's why I'm so crazy for Oysterhead. Claypool/Anastasio can more than keep up with the vibe.

Plus, I'm convinced Claypool is Frank Zappa reincarnated...I just can't get enough/Of his awesome bass playin' and stuff.

I was watching the videos and the first thing I thought was she has no stage presence at all. And then I thought she sounded like she should be singing in Vegas or on a cruise ship. (love the Simon Cowell reference?) But I did get a kick out of her little gestures toward Stewart those couple of times. That was cute.
