Last time I was in Oz, I kid you not - I had people stop me in stores and bug me to talk. I don't have a proper U.S. Southern accent, but apparently these particular people had not met many Americans. (I also realized how ungodly many U.S. states there are and how most people overseas have no idea which is located where. I was able to sort some people out by telling them I'm from the state that spawned Elvis Presley. One of the ones sort of between Texas and Florida.)

I'm sitting here fiddling with my cell phone, trying to install a SIM card from a magical place called The Carphone Warehouse...I'm looking forward to seeing it in the flesh once I hit Heathrow. Bummer I won't be there in September...

(Is it true most mobile carriers in the UK won't let you call people on competing networks...?)

The thing that I always think must be astounding to people from large countries like the US is the vast range of different accents we have in such a small area. People who live 50 miles apart can have wildly different accents in Britain. Weird huh?

You are right, Hannah. I grew up in the city. When I went off to college, one of my roommates was from a small country town north of Dallas. I remember one night we were going to go eat dinner with a couple of guys across the hall from us. These guys wer from New York and New Jersey.

My roommate said something in his thick country accent and they looked at me like I was suppose to translate. I did not understand what he said either.

Dallas is very cosmopolitan. it is very much like L.A. in the sense that it is all about where you live, what you drive. Very mataterialistic in my opinion. Now, Ft. Worth on the other hand.... is still very much country.

They call it Cowtown.

You know what's funny? I think it's like this about everywhere...

I have a small place in a town about 80 miles away, that's really out in the country (my dad died and left it to me six or seven years ago). People out there think Nashville is like Beijing or something, the way they talk about it. Apparently I am a real city slicker. Guess that's just because I don't wear overalls (much)...

I went to LA when I was 21 and I got asked some really strange questions about the UK. One person thought we all rode horses. Then a black guy I met assumed he was the first non-white person I'd ever seen! Oh and one person asked me where I'd learnt to speak such good english. The general consensus seemed to be along the lines that England was one big village full of royalty and various Beatles!

But we are getting way off topic here kids... someone will tell us off any second!

HA!!!! I do get that too, even from other Americans. Yes, the U.S. south does have indoor plumbing and people here do wear shoes...

I was thinking about getting a Virgin Mobile prepaid card and it appeared the charges were like 2x to other mobile networks...I think I'm thinking of this Carphone card I got, and I'm not sure I can call other mobiles with it. Guess I'll have to wait and see!

Mary, are there any resellers near you? Might be worth a try. You have Ebay, I'm pretty sure...?

Someone else here from West london. I live in Uxbridge and i will be there on the 8th. Taking my mate and his wife who are not diehards like me but want to go. They live in Datchet which is 4 stops on the train i think, so not a bad trip at all.
Asked for mid tier and got block 109 which is half way back.
I might go again if they announce another date there, see how the money is at the time.
