And an accompanying tour that includes both the Gamelan and Orchestralli (with Stewart on the drums) pieces. And now that I've had a taste of hearing Stewart's compositions performed live by a full symphony orchestra, I would to hear live full orchestra performances of Solcheeka (pretty much the meaty parts of the Wide Sargasso Sea score), The Stars that Played with Lucky Joe's Cards (never heard any of this work) and Noah's Ark since I totally missed out on those back when they were originally performed and don't know if any live boots.

I've been so busy this week, and saw there are pics and then caught up on my reading. Uh, I guess with Nutters what happens in Dallas doesn't STAY in Dallas, huh?

I shudder to think of the photographic evidence.

All cab and limo corralling was certainly a group effort. We pressganged everyone into helping us. And I think EVERY ONE of us had a monumentally huge fall or two on the ice! We are quite a bunch. Shenannigans ALMOST made up for the cancelled performances. ALMOST. But the performance, D'Drum being truly awesome and a lovely bunch of guys, and the Maestro's pleasure at his peeps being there DEFINITELY made up for the week's hijinx.

I didn't slip on the ice once! Chalk it up to years of ice walking practice and the fugly tundra boots I wore all weekend. Still, do I win a prize or something?
My brother got back from Dallas yesterday. He couldn't wait to phone and tell me how it was so warm that he went for a swim in his hotel's OUTDOOR pool.

I forgot to mention one thing that really fascinated me during the performance. From where I was sitting I could clearly see Stewart and Fiona in their loge seats. Despite all the action and wonderful music occuring on stage, I kept stealing occasional glances over toward Stewart. He was sitting still. Regardless of the occasion (interview, performance, watching someone else's performance), I've never before seen him sit still like that for an extended period. Of course, I wasn't expecting him to be head banging, but all the same, it seemed so odd to see him so still.

He made up for that during the curtain calls! Especially when he turned around and bowed and waved to the orchestra and the people sitting behind the stage.

There was an older couple sitting behind me, and before the performance I heard the man trying to explain to the woman who Stewart is. (He probably asked his kids, he didn't sound too clear about it himself.) Afterward, the woman was remarking on Stewart's enthusiastic appearance and the overwhelming audience reaction, and the man said "Well, he IS a rock star!"

Today I received a lovely e-mail from D'Drum thanking me as one of the "everyone who took part in the success" of the gamelan piece. Cool! It's not like I was polishing the gongs or anything, but I did clap long and loud at the end of the performance. Anyway, they provided a link to their website where there is now posted several reviews, a few of which we hadn't seen here yet. Another old thread bump!

One year ago today, I was snowed in at a cheap hotel in Dallas, waiting for the ice to thaw and for everyone else to arrive to see the Gamelan D'Drum performance. My Nutter initiation, and what a crazy week of blizzard adventure it was.

Thanks for bumping this. It's hard to believe that it's been a year! I was thinking of you on Monday night, Gina. I was driving home from my night course during a bit of a snow storm that left the roads rather slick and treacherous. (Still not as bad as Dallas was though.) I kept my courage up by thinking about your outstanding winter driving performance in Dallas. My mantra was "Gina did it; so can I!" And I did without so much as a scary skid.

Hey, Stewart! How about a gamelan anniversary tour?

I'm glad you made it safely, but it's funny to me that my driving gave you courage, because I was terrified the whole time that I was going to kill us all. I don't think y'all realize what a risk you took with your lives riding with me. I had never driven on ice before in my life. The only other time in my life I've even seen weather like that was the Blizzard of '93. I'm used to heat waves and tornadoes.

But meeting and hanging out with all of you, seeing that incredible performance, and getting to shake Stewart's hand more than made up for the crazy weather. It was definitely a road trip I'll never forget. And I do plan to go back to Texas one day (in the summer!) to visit the town where I was born, since I never got to do that last year.
