D'Drum Makes It Official--Concerto for World Percussion

Postby thedaner on 10 Feb 2010 15:02

Hello everyone,

Not only am I proud to be a (somewhat) frequent contributing nutter on this forum, I am also pleased to be the official spokesperson for the Dallas percussion ensemble, D'Drum. As you know, this ensemble has been asked to perform with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Stewart's Concerto for World Percussion. As previously posted, this will happen February 3-5, 2011 at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas, with Jaap Van Zweden conducting. Stewart will be in attendance, but he is neither conducting nor performing in the Concerto.

As of yesterday they have made it official on their website, http://www.pureddrum.com, along with an email sent out to their mailing list. They have added a special page devoted to this project with photos of the band and Stewart, a trailer video which contains Stewart rehearsing with the band, and a special photo gallery of all the exotic instruments that are being used for the Concerto:

I also wanted to let you know that stewartcopeland.net will be updated shortly with info on the event, along with a Facebook fan page (to be launched later this week) and a D'Drum YouTube Channel.

Any questions you have will be answered by me via the band; we will keep you updated with any new developments or content added to the site, Facebook and YouTube pages. D'Drum would love for you to get on their mailing list and peruse the rest of their site at your leisure. If you can support them by listening/purchasing their music on iTunes or CD Baby they would be very grateful.

A link to purchasing tickets for next February's event is also on the special D'Drum/SC page.

D'Drum would like to thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you in Dallas next year!

One other thing: that weekend will be the Super Bowl, so not only are they (D'Drum/DSO/Stewart) up against a huge sporting event, but the game will be at the new Cowboys stadium. And if the 'Boys happen to get into the big game, well it's going to be mayhem here. However, D'Drum would love to take advantage of the various media groups in town to get them to pay attention to a really cool musical event for a couple of hours. It's not ALL about football in Dallas...

What's especially cool for me is that opening night falls on my birthday! Yo!

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up on the timing (and all the other news)! I can imagine that will make travel planning a bitch unless done well in advance.

Hmm.

Yes--since it's officially out and on the DSO's schedule, start planning now b/c hotel rooms are going to get scarce! The game is in Arlington and although 20 miles outside of downtown Dallas, you can bet that it will be hard to stay anywhere in the DFW area.

Thanks for the info.

While the recent addition to my family makes it more difficult for me to make it, it is possible.

That it will be Super Bowl weekend rather sucks for what it will do for hotel room availability and prices.

And, daner, I don't think the Cowboys are ready to make it to the Super Bowl next season.
SC-There are a few crazy people on this planet. Sure sign of that is that they kinda like my music

I don't think the Cowboys will make it either, but by some fluke of Bizarro-World luck they do, this place will be ph#$king crazy!

I know a Gamelan definition was posted on the "Stewart's Upcoming Projects" post, but here's D'Drum's take:

The word “Gamelan” (GAH-mah-lahn) is the generic term for Indonesian ensembles of predominantly struck instruments, distinguished by their own particular instrumentation, structure, and feeling of order. Though decidedly flavored by the instruments and musical sensibilities of Bali and Java, many of the percussion instruments featured in Gamelan D’Drum are also from other cultures found in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, the USA, and elsewhere.

Those from Bali, Java, and Africa are not typically designed to be in tune with a Western orchestra, so D’Drum traveled to Indonesia to have custom made Reyong and Gender crafted for this purpose.
