Spinal Tap Unwigged/Unplugged: A great time was had by all! Go go go go go.
(Sorry folks, my browser just retched up a hairball and ruined a post I had already written, which I'll now try to reconstruct...apologies if it seems a little disjointed...)
Shearer, Guest, McKean are really talented musicians. It takes balls to merely step on stage at the Ryman and tread in the footsteps of the likes of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, so usually the shows there are pretty good. This one: no exception. These guys are as talented musically as virtually any other acoustic musician I've ever seen there. It helps when Delbert McClinton, Bela Fleck and Casey Driessen show up to noodle around on the acoustic numbers, so more of them were played than straight up rockin' covers of Tap material, but it was kinda fun to hear some classic songs like 'Sex Farm' and 'Big Bottom' receive the banjo treatment. The cover of the Stones' 'Start Me Up' alone was likely worth the price of admission.

There were some fun anecdotes, like the edits NBC wanted to 'Spinal Tap' before they'd show it on the air, and a couple fan films were broadcast on a projection screen at the back of the stage.
Just good fun, interspersed with a lot of great patter from the guys. (Fave question: 'If J.J. Abrams shot a ST prequel, who would play you?' Seth Green was suggested for Shearer, which kinda works, no?
Well worth the price of admission. I personally got some props from others in the crowd for having worn a Stonehenge t-shirt I picked up in Salisbury back in '07....

Completely deaf, exhausted, but totally happy to have gotten to see the Damned with PapaCat and Conroy.
The 10lb of boots I was wearing didn't stop me from completely spazzing out all night. Never thought I'd get to see them, never imagined I'd get to see them in a small club like the Black Cat, etc.
They rip it out like they were 20. Cap was wearing signature red beret and some killer cheetah print bondage pants, Dave in dapper black suit and shades. The keyboardist (Monty Oxy Moron) was a complete and utter spazz all night, was great. There was even a drum circle at one point, with Dave holding a tom for Monty, Cap on a snare, and Pinch on drums all hammering away with abandon.
Was insane. Was so loud I felt nauseous at certain points. Vocals weren't mic'd right and didn't hear as much of Dave's truly lovely voice as I would have liked by basically I left my face somewhere in DC.
A killer setlist, indeed: Love Song, New Rose, neat Neat Neat, Anti-Pope, I Fall, Eloise, Curtain Call, Stretcher Case, Melody Lee, Smash It Up, Jet Boy Jet Girl, and off the new record Dark Asteroid, Under the Wheels, and Dr. Woofenstein. They played more, that's what I remember right now!
Unexpected surprise: the second opening band, the BellRays absolutely blew me away. Totally. Was really hard rock/punk with an amazing singer laying soul over the top. Punk-rocked out soul, pure heaven. They were amazing--and have something totally unique going on. Check em out!

I have been meaning to get on here and post about a show I saw on Friday last and I see that Dive has already been here.
Let me just echo that Unwigged and Unplugged was a great show -- grab a seat if you can.
We did not have any visiting artists at our show, except Annette O'Toole. Still, it was great musicianship and wonderful humor -- definitely recommend.
The Q&A portion was moderately funny; made so by a drunken/stoned, used-up, 80s rocker chick in the balcony, who never quite clearly articulated anything besides her lust for the players. She was a show unto herself. I think she had everyone in the audience convinced that she was going to launch herself, or at a minimum that her breasts would launch themselves, at the stage as she teetered on the edge of the balcony. I can't believe they gave her the mic! Throughout all parts of the show, her boyfriend/husband kept having to pull her back to prevent her from toppling over the edge. She would have blended into Spinal Tap quite easily as an extra.
As odd and uncomfortable as it was to watch her, her display kind of perfected the show!
And, thanks to Smudge for making me realize this tour was even happening.

Just wanted to say that Gina's assement of the Damned show was dead on. It was a fun show and they're still kicking butt. If they ever need to cast for a live-action version of the Simpsons, Monty Oxy Moron looked exactly like how I would imagine Side-show Bob would look like if he were a real person.
Also have to agree how impressed I was with the Bellrays. LA area nutters should keep an ear out for them (they hail from Riverside). I would love to see them again as a headlining act. Also, the guitarist Bob looks like a cross between Stewart and Garth from Wayne's World: http://www.thebellrays.com/about/band-members/bob/

Just back from All Tomorrow's Parties, in the company of the magnificent Hannaha - room-mate and road-warrior par-excellence. (I'm proud to know a woman who can do a wheel change in 5 minutes.)
If The Breeders show up anywhere near anyone in the foreseeable future, GO, SEE. They converted me this weekend (uhuh - I'm two decades behind the curve). Kelly Deal doubled up as knitting guru for the weekend, to great aclaim.
Bon Iver was a whole different proposition in the flesh. From quiet, slightly noodly recording, to stunning, big sound live. (Two drummers, managing near-synchronised beats - and the slightly off was goooooooood.).
An hour in the company of Teenage Fanclub is always an endurance test for the smile muscles, and thus it was this time. New album in October.
X were awesomely un-recontructed, three decades on. Bogglingly good.
Gang of Four had me eating out of their angsty palms right up until the microwave was brought on stage and ceremoniously beaten (this required a 'white goods' tech to ensure the damn thing didn't fall off the monitor it was perched on while being demolished). Silly. Sorry. I know they're 'seminal'.
Giant Sand may be the progenitors of alt.country, but it felt a bit like they'd been left behind. Magnificent musicians, wonderful sound - but they have so many imitators...

I had a good time at the Billy Joel - Elton John concert on Tuesday evening. They each played solo & then they played some songs together. All together it was at least 3 hours of good music. It only took about 5 minutes to get the stage ready between sets. Our seats were in the top section, 2 rows in. I was really looking forward to seeing Billy & I'm glad I was able to attend. dunno if this counts, but saw Madame De Sade last night with Damn Judy Jench, sorry, Dame Judy Dench and Frances Barber (who i always think is Frances Tomelty) at the Wyndham theatre, lahndahn. Damn Judy received a warm hand on her entrance...
