Anybody alive in there?

Please drag your grime-coated, hungover, battle-scarred bodies over to a keyboard and check in, would ya?

Love,
Mom

Nobody but us in here...

It ended up being a weekend of frustration for me. I lost virtually all cell phone service at some point, with about half my text messages going out and no real idea how many i was receiving. I saw where i had some voice mail, but i couldn't access it, nor make any calls.

I did get the message to meet at the salon at 3PM Saturday. But by that time i had taken ill. Seriously, if the Police had gone on any earlier that evening, i would likely have been forced to bow out of going. By 8PM i was feeling at least cognizant enough to physically make it out there, so i gave it a go. One of my other companions was still crashed out and couldn't even accompany me (although he did go later, even if he missed the opening).

I got there about a half hour before the show and proceeded to move as close to the stage as possible, 'til people started complaining and i opted to halt my forward momentum. It wasn't as close as i wanted to be, but i had a decent view and didn't want to spoil others' experience. I wanted the event to be as positive as possible, since i felt i'd missed out completely on meeting anyone from here. I was hoping for a super enthusiastic crowd so i didn't have to hold anything back.

It was not to be. Being further back than our other assembled brethren, i had a much more constant view of the crowd, particularly the numerous throngs between myself and the stage. I have to bitterly acknowledge they were pretty much statues for nearly the entirety of the show. There were even people right in front of me SITTING DOWN for a good portion of the show! I eventually went ahead and stepped right in front of them, since they obviously didn't care if they had a good view or not.

Sure, songs like Message, Roxanne, and Every Breath You Take drew great responses, but i felt surrounded by a generation that just missed out, and really only knew the very biggest radio hits. What's more, my other buddy Reid acknowledged having the exact same experience being an estimated 15 rows back from the stage. I'm really glad the sc.net crowd was in a more Police-friendly atmosphere!

But that's just my own personal perspective on things: i found the performances really fresh and enjoyable! Chad, i agree with nearly every one of your assessments and want to say thanks for not only for your review, but also for your generous gift some weeks back. I had really looked forward to thanking you for the cd's in person, but i guess it wasn't meant to be!

Sorry you didn't have an optimal time, Chris. You feeling okay now? (I'm NOT going to ask why you guys were sick . . . )

(The crappy part about large crowds, especially in the Idaho/nosebleeds area, is that you often end up with folks who don't seem to want to be there much. In the past few years I've seen bands performing astronomically, yet the audience are zombies. I don't know what that's about really. To each his own, but it can put a damper on your own experience.)

Are there any other shows that are going to be in your area, Chris? Because I'd really like to help you get a better show experience somehow . . .

Wow, sorry it kinda sucked for you. I can't believe there were actually people sitting down in the middle of the crowd!! Why go take up space from people that want to be there?

An Atlanta show was just announced. Is that feasible? Don't know how far that is from you.
Stewart and Stanley together again!! YO!

Sorry to hear jedsoon. It's reading experiences like that where I know Bonnaroo is and never will be for me. I just think it's compromising too much and I think a lot has to do with the weather. I think they should opt for Bonnaroo to be in the Spring or perhaps the Fall.

Summer is too much there. And after reading of illnesses galore this weekend, it doesn't surprise me.

jedsoon, try and catch The Police on a show date. I saw the Chili Peppers at Lolla last year and the people there unenthused bugged me too, but when I saw them in concert, it was great.

Pooh to the sitters!!!

Jedson you poor thing!!

You made the effort even though you were feeling bad and others just didn't!!

The audience makes the performance and if they are sh*t around you then it's not much fun!!
Like the others I think you should try and get to another show if you can.... hopefully it'll be better!!

Sounds like you're already filling in the blanks, DM! Guess i should stop short of any self-incrimination 8)

It was a weekend of incredible highs and lows, some of which i can't even go into here. :) Overall, the experience was quite life-affirming, even if i can't claim to have enjoyed every minute of it. It was artistically fulfilling because i got to build a drum and even make a short movie, not to mention the trip was an important bonding experience with my buds, one of whom i've had more of a competitive relationship with in the past.

Regarding the Police, I really shouldn't have let others' lack of enthusiasm get me down in the first place. It's pretty unrealistic to expect everybody else to have been listening to this stuff for 24 years just because *I* have. At a venue like that, with a 100 other bands and a unique cultural experience drawing folks in, it's only natural to expect that a band that's been out of action this long to come off as more of a curiousity than anything.

It *did* make me think that they could just as easily have been playing some of their more obscure stuff, tho. If it's not a Big Hit Song, chances are the general audience won't have heard it anyway.

Chad, i'm really looking forward to that disc. :D Were you guys trying to find me after the show? I mean, i heard people yelling "Chris!" three or four times a day, but as i was collecting myself after the Police show, i could have sworn i heard a "jedsoon!" following my name. I stopped and looked around, figuring i would at least recognize Jean. But in the dark, those throngs of people offered no familiar faces.

As for another show... whew. That's a huge expense for someone on my budget. Although i can now say i've finally seen the Police, the crowd experience is so much a part of it that i can't really say i've done that bit. I wanna be surrounded by other folks singing and dancing as hard as me!! When is that Atlanta show? I was kinda planning a trip there the last weekend of September, any chance the stars could be in alignment?

Chris, honey, I TOLD you to stay away from the brown acid. Even if it wasn't all highs (*ahem*) during the weekend, I'm glad you guys had some good bonding time.

Police-wise, Atlanta isn't until November. But if you can get to another show, I'll get you into a seat. I can't promise it will be a great seat, but hopefully I could get you a good seat (and I can certainly get you into the building). They still seem to be adding fall dates, so maybe a new date nearby will pop up? (Current tour schedule: https://tickets.thepolice.com/ ) Send me an email. We'll figure it out.
