Everyone Stares Derangements

i was going to start a thread on this topic after i'd had a chance to further explore the dvd, but i guess now is as good a time as any.

i should clarify that i have yet to watch the commentary or bonus footage, so i may be missing some things.

but i noticed with great relish that stew utilized his menu screens to give us complete versions of the derangements without chatter or other sounds cluttering them up. i find it a very interesting way of getting around not being able to just release them outright on cd. at least not yet, anyway.

but i have only found four of them: one on the main menu screen, one on each chapter page, and one on the audio setup page. john, you mention locating six this way. what am i missing?

i went over every menu screen i found with my remote's directional pointer. i literally went every direction from every clickable point. i never uncovered even one "easter egg", which is usually a clickable link that isn't visible on the screen and must be found thru such experimentation.

conroy mentioned discovering some, which is another good reason to jumpstart this discussion. can anyone post a definitive list of all the derangements available on the disc in their entirety (ie, not mixed in to the film's soundtrack), as well as how to access them?

HMMM. I think I may have a nifty utility that would allow us to isolate those songs, and dump 'em onto a CD...I'm going to conduct a bit of experimentation on my own.

Okay, according to the end credits, the Derangement tracks are:

1. Put Out the Red Light
2. Strange Obsession
3. Train Just Coming
4. Enough For You and Me
5. Footsteps
6. I Can't I Can't
7. So Close to Me

Here's where I found them in the menus:

1. Extras (main page)
2. Extras > Behind Andy's Camel
3. Extras > Live Shards
4. ???
5. Chapters (second page)
6. Chapters (first page)
7. Setup

Likewise, I could find no hidden buttons or screens. Conroy, any help with #4?

I easily captured all the tracks except #4 to CD-quality AIFF files using WireTapPro. These can easily be converted to MP3 or AAC in iTunes. I would be a little reluctant to start sending them around, however, if it would mean incurring the wrath of Stewart (or more likely the Stingster).

It's simple enough, though if you have the DVD -- download Wiretappro from VersionTracker, pay the shareware fee, and hit "record"!

i have to think that the credits for the film refer to music actually contained in the soundtrack and do not necessarily apply to the menu screens. i seem to remember he had done more than seven anyway. i think it's likely we'll see them released eventually as part of some reissues of some sort.

peter gabriel did this too with white ashes, although it sounds more like different snippets of a remix on his menus. one day i'm planning to record the audio and make my own mix.

as far as easter eggs for everyone stares, well, conroy is the one who originally used the term in the first place. he could have just been referring to the presence of the songs themselves, without intending that they were something we would have to dig for. so, maybe he'll poke his head in here to clarify his statement.

Yeah, that's what I meant -- the credits list the tracks that are used in the film. Six of those seven are in the menus. You've heard there are more?

Rumor I heard was that Stewart wanted to release them as an album but Sting nixed it. I think they're incredibly cool, and would have happily bought the CD. Mixing the original Don't Stand with the '86 version was particularly clever!

There was one more derangement used in the bonus footage...Does Every Stare, which sounded particularly interesting. I have had the other derangements on cd for some years now. Not too hard to find if you know where to look friends. It's really easy to put any audio source onto a regular cd if you have adobe audition, or even sawpro. Adobe is much simpler to use though.

Maybe we'll need to get some clarification from the management as far as which items they'd prefer we copy for our own internal usage, and which things they'd rather we didn't. Clearly none of us would ever copy anything to sell for profit (and honestly I'd much rather buy CDs/movies/what have you from Stewart as official releases, than some experimentation that may or may not be how he'd want to deliver the final enterprise...but your mileage may vary, obviously.)

Does your CD have any other tracks besides the seven I listed? If you wouldn't mind e-mailing me an MP3 or AAC of "Enough for you & me", I'd greatly appreciate it.... I've got a bunch of rare stuff -- perhaps there's something I can send you in exchange.

Actually there are a couple more...
There is a Does Everyone Stare, which was an afterthought for the extra DVD material (actually includes a few bars of GZMO – don’t tell A or S). And then there is, as an after after thought, a little version of Bring on the Night, which NO ONE has heard but Andy – who hates it. They may appear soon in the Vault...
