The Rythmatist on DVD!

Stewart, I'm sure you've been asked this before, but when can we see this out on DVD? Same with Urgh! A Music War. That would be great to see on DVD as well.

Hey there Mister (hope you don't mind if I call you Mister)...

This is oft-trod territory here on SC.net. One of our own, Jedsoon, has launched a one-man crusade to get Rhythmatist on DVD, but we haven't had an update from the Man Himself on the status. We're also all clamoring for a re-release of the Klark Kent Kollected Works record on CD, since the only copies to be had on Ebay are running around $90.

"Urgh" is so tangled up with permissions from various music licensing companies that it's shelved into perpetuity. I may have heard a rumor that Miles was working on it - you may want to run by www.backstagecafe.com/askian/index.cfm to see if anyone there knows anything about it.

Most of Stewart Copeland projects masters are still in the hands of the publishers and usually they are the ones that decides about rereleases, of course together (for what I know) with the composer or artist himself.

Stewart and I talked a lot about rereleasing The Rhythmatist, as I brought him the whole 'choral request' from so many fans, including me, but he always said it's not on his mind to rerelease that recording, even if there is a huge request; that's mainly because of an artist issue, he doesn't feel like having it around again.
I'm sure that commercially it would be a good release and the feedback would be perfect (we won't see it in the charts but it would bring tons of reviews and I'm sure good ones), but we also got to respect the artist choice....
Let's hope he will change his mind (maybe he already changed it...we were talking about it a couple of years ago...).

I suggested him to re-release the cd with bonus tracks and (if not the dvd), extracts from the movie on enhanced tracks...but the perfect thing would be a box set with :

CD
DVD
DVD with extras
- he got private video stuff on his own camera
- an interview with JP Ditilleux
- audio commentary
- an interview with Stewart

WOULDN'T IT BE AMAZING???

He could always make "Rhythmatist 2." Seriously. He knows a million Hollywood people, right? He's got great moviemaking chops.

So why not recruit a few new guitarists, or the Gizmo guys...have this one be set somewhere in rural South America?

It's always hazardous, though, setting up a credible plotline. I guess I'm thinking about "Hard Day's Night," here, and seems like straight-up music documentaries often don't do well. Maybe a documentary about rural artists, interspersed with Stewart playing with 'em...?

Hey, I've got a better idea: Did he do any ES:TPIO style footage for any of the Gizmo shows? Why not tell the tale of why Stewart went to Italy? It's not a very conventional choice, for rock musicians. Why did he go there and learn a lot of 'heavy' (his word) folk songs? There's bound to be some kind of compelling backstory.

Eugenio and I did most of the video recordings...something around 20 hours???...yes, more or less; we still got to convert everything on to dvd or similar; something will be used here, on this website.

My copy of Rhythmatist was one of the vinyl treasures lost forever to some "charitable" cause.
It had better have cured someone of something!

You know, I'm kind of serious, though. It'd be a really cool feature film (not to disparage whatever you'll do on the website here, which I'm sure will be terrific.)

We're still waiting to see that Stewart interview you did for SkyTV by the way - no pressure, just enthusiasm I'd love to see your other programs, too.

sad "news" gio, even tho things could have changed in a couple of years. i'm still unsure from your wording if you refer to the album or movie, tho.

erin, i'm pretty sure he means his own private dvd copy, but i could easily be wrong.

oh well, i still cling to the hope SOMEthing will result from his stated plans earlier this year to do something with his unused rhythmatist footage. guess we'll just have to stay tuned!

I bought a bootleg dvd copy of Urgh A Music War for $10 bucks in Atlanta at a record convention. It sounds perfect and plays perfect. At the same one I bought The Police Live at Rockpalast dvd(awesome!). They even have Rush Live Exit Stage Left dvd which is not officially released yet as far as I know!I try to go to this convention at least twice a year. They have it every few months.

Another great dvd I reccommend that you should be able to find easy is The Old Grey Whistle Test on dvd. It has amazing footage of many great bands in the 70's (early Police, Curtis Mayfield, Talking Heads, etc).
