Man! When it rains, it pours - the YO forum

Postby Divemistress of the Dark on 02 Oct 2006 01:05

I just spent a few days out of town, and I just came back to find NINE new threads in the YO forum!! Yowza!!

There's only one downside - I have to study my ASS off this week for another level of dive-instructor training. I have to learn really hard stuff, like physiology and physics (what happens to your body when it's exposed to several times the weight of the atmosphere under water, what to do if you come up from the depths too quickly - which can cause all kinds of nasty effects, etc.) So, I'd set aside the next few days for really hitting the books - and I have the feeling I'm going to be really hitting this forum reading all this stuff instead!!

I certainly don't mean to complain - how awesome is this!! Tons of new forum entries!! But if you guys see me logged on here for hours on end, remind me I have studying to do, willya? Thanks in advance. :) Your friend, hoping not to be ex-DotD

I was pretty sure she was too.

I was hoping there would be 9 more when I got back, but no luck.

Man when we got out there, there was no service on our cells. So we restarted them (sometimes works with computers), and ahh connected with a network! Just not our network.... we use T-Mobile and it connected with Cingular.

I was fine the whole time, even when I found out. But BOOM when the preacher said, "Served his country through WW2, Korea, and Vietnam, and was a POW", and I looked up and saw the American flag, I started crying. I'm cool now, but I needed that everyone else had cried over it, but I just couldn't.

Don't you think you are asking for too much?

Did you already read in a deep way all new KK's reports?

Of coarse I did. Especially the one about him becoming a member of the mile high club. I still find that one funny.

I just wanted, more. Thought there would be one or two.

Long story short? Surfacing too quickly from a depth of 30 meters could kill you. Slowly and painfully.

Scuba diving is sort of like driving an automobile. If you follow the rules and are careful, you'll be just fine. If you don't - it's bad news, and quickly.

You can go to about 40 meters without difficulty. Any more than that and things get complicated...unless you are breathing a higher percentage of oxygen than is naturally in the air (around 20%). Sometimes people do, to stay down longer. You can breathe about 32% oxygen, but you can't go as deep...(only around 30 meters)...if you breathed pure oxygen you could only go to about 3 meters before it would kill you.

I really should have studied more today, but I got busy reading things on here and following a political scandal that's taking place in the U.S...I'm a little bit of a current-events junkie, so I had trouble tearing myself away...!

(Oh, and I always get asked about sharks by people who know I teach diving. Mostly people are afraid of great whites, but they don't live near coral reefs where people dive and are fond of extremely cold water. I'm going cage diving to see some in Mexico next year.

I love sharks, personally, but mostly I see smaller ones that aren't terribly dangerous to people. Remind me to post some photos I took of gray reef sharks this summer...)
