Didn't realise anyone had been killed? What happened?
Oh Mrs. Gradenko you really need to brush up on your music history! "Is anybody alive in there?" You must be a young one!

You need to rent The Stones documentary of the Altamonte concert (I forget the exact title) when it all went down. Hell Angels were put in charge of security. Some guy pulled a gun out and they stabbed him to death while the Stones were playing.

I started going to concerts at a young age. My first real concert was at five years old. My dad took me to see Average White Band and Wild Cherry in Cleveland Ohio 1976. I remember sitting in the balcony seats looking down and my dad's cherry from his cig fell and burnt my arm. Steve Ferrone was then, and always will be one of my favorite drummers.

The first one I remember vividly was Cheap Trick in 1982 at the Sunrise Musical Theater in Florida (where The Police had played for Zenyatta). Remember that feeling you got at your first big concert when you take it all in and you are overwhelmed and caught up in it?

Of course, The Police played in S. Florida every tour while I lived there, but I missed every one. I was 9-11 years old at the time. I almost went to The Synchronicity show at the Orange Bowl but my mom's friend sold me out a week before the show.

Favorite Concert moments..
Seeing Buddy Rich front row center in Canton, Ohio 1986 and meeting him afterwards, 5 months before he passed. He was a gentleman to me.

Seeing Miles Davis perform in Cleveland Ohio in 1990, 5 months before he passed.

Seeing Elvin Jones perform in Columbus, Ohio in 1998 and meeting him afterwards.

The Rollins Band at Woodstock 94. The set was so powerful and the weather seemed to change with the intensity of each song. It reminded me of how The Police talk about how the Shea Stadium gig went and how it was so magical. If you where there for the Rollins Band set, you know what I am talking about.

The Green Day set at WS 94 was amazing too with the big infamous mud brawl. Later that year at a show I met Mike Dirnt who talked to me for awhile and who by far was the nicest one in the band.

Meeting Perry Farrell backstage at Porno 4 Pyros show and hanging out there for a long time. He is also a great person and so very polite and well mannered backstage, but a monster on stage! Also, seeing Jane's Addiction reunite in Atlanta a few years ago.

Seeing The Pretenders, meeting Martin and Chrissy Hynde after the show and giving her a big hug!

Others to mention:
Aerosmith when they re-united with Joe Perry in 1984
Fishbone and Primus together in 1991
Allan Holdsworth with Gary Husband on Drums
John Scofield with John Riley on Drums
The Stones in 1989 and again in 2005
RL Burnside (3 times)
311 (7 times)
Helmet in 1994 and 1996
and many, many more..

They put a biker gang in charge of security? Weird! Why didn't they just get regular security people? Because a biker gang would be cooler?

Did they get arrested for murder?

When was this?

Hey Erin, there's a lot of detail on this, probably more than we can put in the forum. Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altamont_Music_Festival

There are two documentary movies about it: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimme_Shelter_%28documentary%29">"Gimme Shelter"</a>, which shows footage from the concert, and there's one on the aftermath of it called "Cocksucker Blues"...it's hard to find, though. (<a href="http://www.culturecourt.com/Ajo/media/CBlues.htm">Here's</a> more info.

My favorite was in Toronto Canada 05-08-1983 with James Brown, Peter Tosh, The Fixx, and a Toronto band called Blue Peter and even though I knew the singer he couldn't get me back stage! Damn!.

Best concert ever...I love Peter Tosh too so it was awesome, even though the crowd was there only to see The Police, I think they threw garbage at Joan Jett, I think.

Ahhh a long time ago, good times.

Thanks "Police"

I remember a long time ago, when I was studying in Switzerland, I went to some Colombian friends to see Santana and Bob Dylan, and ther everybody throw garbage to Bob Dylan, cause everybody was there to see Santana play...

4 deaths, and 4 births, weird.

"And free beer." All they had to do was move the beer to get them to protect the stage..lol!

Alas, you will all be so disappointed in me.
I never got the chance to see the Police in concert. I was probably 14 during the Synchronicity tour and my parents were not the type to let me out on my own to do that sort of thing.
If memory serves, they never did hit Toronto during that tour either (I just know someone here will set me straight if I lie!). I have a VHS of the Montreal concert though.
Concerts I do remember fondly include the Cure and Violent Femmes. I never had the same fanaticism about anybody else after the Police though.

I never got to see the Police together, either :(

I didn't get into their music until after 1985 or so, so I was too late.

I have had the wonderful chance to see Andy perform live, I think about 5 times now, and finally Stewart just a short while ago. I managed to catch Sting for free a few minutes when he was doing a Today show taping as well, heh!

I never got to see them together either. If they waited at least, like 10 years to brake up, I might have had a chance...

I always felt that way about the Beatles. They released their last album a year or two after I was born.

But at least we can see videos of concerts, that's better then nothing

Lets see Synchronicity was 4 years before, and AI was about 14 months.

At least with them seprate I'm just that much more likley to see a show...

Ah, my first concert was Sting on the Nothing Like the Sun tour. I saved myself so he'd be my first, LOL! I've seen him about 15 times now, but never got to see the POLICE.

Since then I'd say Metallica and Aerosmith have been the best shows I've seen, and I've seen them all - Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode, New Order, Squeeze, Rush, Fleetwood Mac, INXS, Sarah McLachlan and lots more.
yo!!

my first concert was KISS.

i was eight and my brother was seven. our mom was a tie-dyeing hippie back in the day, so she understood a little about rebellion and music and in her own way allowed us our eccentricities. she took us to see the show. this was the ALIVE tour, circa 1978, when the band were in their full original costumed glory.

it was kind of intimidating. such a huge venue, with so many people. i'd never experienced anything like it before. me and my brother were by far the youngest people i saw there, and everyone towered over us. i don't remember there being an opening act, but for all i know we may have missed them. at that age, i would have resented their presence on KISS' stage.

my KISS fandom was in full thrall at the time. to me it was the costumes and super-heroics, as they were already starring in comic books and movies where they displayed super powers. i didn't even realize they had a sexual connotation until much later, after i'd pretty much lost interest in them. they were never really very talented musically, but my attention was elsewhere.

before they took the stage, the crowd began a chant that apparenly lives on to this day among assembled rock fans: "S#!#! G@& D@%*! Get off your @$$ and slam!" this pretty much scared me outright. plus, what was my mom going to think of all this? of course, everyone was on their feet by this time, and from our vantage point and height, we could not hope to see the stage.

after the show kicked in, we relocated to seats that were positioned above and to the left of the stage. i hated that we weren't in front, but why bother going to a show if we couldn't see it? mom came up with the idea of moving and led the way. occasionally gene or paul would acknowledge the crowd to the side, which bolstered my enthusiasm.

our new seating position yielded a far more tame section of the crowd that actually remained seated for most of the show, so we had a blast! gene indulged in all his famous theatrics, which included spitting blood and breathing fire, making my first concertgoing experience very memorable indeed...
