I already voted, but my 2 cents...

I loved the first Oysterhead cd and still listen to it quite a bit when I'm in the right frame of mind. I especially enjoy all the live shows I've heard that really dig into those songs and would *love* to see them hit the road again (as I missed the tour in person and only have the bootlegs!) Les is definitely an aquired taste but seeing him with the Frog Brigade a while back, I am definitely a convert.

I like the quirky combination of talents in the band, and I'd be really curious to hear what they might come up with for a second album. Sure, it's not going to be to everyone's taste, but then again, no band is.

Well, I suppose there's no accounting for taste.

I live near the 'Roo venue and have been a couple of times...I don't know if I'll be dying to go back, honestly, because they have started to really oversell that venue and it's getting to where you can't get within a hundred miles of the stage. The organizers claimed it was 80,000 this year but we thought there were A LOT more than 2004 (plus breakdowns with the fountains and free water trucks on a 95 degree day, and vendors charging $4 for a tiny bottle of water, didn't help.) Also, another drawback is that many artists think playing 'Roo means they've played Nashville, when only about 15% of the 'Roo attendees are local.

We didn't stay for the headliner this year, Radiohead (which we had really wanted to see), because we were so far back we couldn't even see the jumbotrons clearly. At that point, it's way more about the drunk kids in front of and behind you, and trying to avoid being trampled by them as they start to "dance"...not my idea of fun.

Anyway, I saw several more bands (what I could see of them from far away, anyway) and I definitely thought Oysterhead's was one of the better sets. The only others that came close were Seu Jorge and the awesome Swedish band Dungen...but Bonnaroo is an outdoor concert and I thought their sound would have been much better in a club setting. Plus, again, it was frustrating having to concentrate more on the shoving and kicking coming from other audience members than on hearing the music, but maybe I'm just old...At least parking was better this year.

I guess I can see how some might have expected the band to be tighter, but they don't play together all that much, and I think the jam band aspect makes it more fun to listen to. Seems like the point is to listen to the songs and have fun, not revel in the musician-ness of it all...but then, others may (and probably will) disagree.

(Plus I love the weirdo lyrics and wild vocal effects...and the Whamola, plus Trey's antler-theremin thingy, made it all worthwhile for me. Trey looks like a kindly high school shop teacher, I think...

OK, I loved it. I'm not sure I can quantify exactly why, but I'm not sure it's always easy to put into words why you love any particular music.)

I have been into Primus from back in 1991 and some Phish stuff is good (Nectar) but nothing compares to the genius of Stewart. Les is an original character that's for sure.

Divemistress is 100 percent correct ... Bonnaroo isn't worth the hassle and threat.

I would drive 500 miles to see Oysterhead play, but knowing they were going to be in that pit of filth, risk and theives erased that option (although it was just over 200 miles from me). One Bonnaroo was plenty for me, and that's a real shame because the best bands go there.

Well, and the thing is, they don't sell one-day passes. I'd probably go back to see Oysterhead again, but believe me - I'll exhaust any and all other options first. Luckily I'm only about four hours from Atlanta, so that's always a possibility (although a lot of bands do play Nashville...was interested to see the footage in ES:TPIO from what was likely the Police's set at the Exit/In here in town. They still have a sign on the wall saying the band played there...I didn't ever believe it until I noticed Sting wearing an Exit/In t-shirt on the back cover of Zenyatta Mondatta...)

Honestly? I hadn't heard Grand Pecking Order when I saw the guys at Bonnaroo. Picked it up at the onsite record store, listened to it on the way home, loved it.

(What do I like about it...the really good arrangements...the funny, intelligent lyrics...the way I play air drums in the car listening to it despite myself...

)

Q. Stewart Copeland said he's hoping Oysterhead [which also features Les Claypool] will play more shows or make another album this year. Any chance of that happening?

After October, I don't know what's going to happen, [but] I had such a good time playing with [Oysterhead] this summer [at Bonnaroo]. I thought it sounded a lot better the second time around. I missed those guys. They're so funny. We keep joking about doing another album because we already have a title: "02 -- You Gotta Have It."
