Stewart,

With the success of Everyone Stares and bringing GIZMO to the U.S. How about getting The Rhythmatist released on DVD? I for one would buy immediately. :?:

cp... we need to talk! my email is jedsoon@hotmail.com.

i've been clamoring for a re-release of the rhythmatist at LEAST every other day or so here. divemistress in our recent discussion mentioned that stewart has disowned the movie? i'm still unsure, but he does plan to do a new rhythmatist movie as far as i know, based on an interview from earlier this year. whether it will be a re-envisioning of the original, or a completely new animal, or both (!) is still open to conjecture.

i would love some official confirmation or update on this!

it would be just ridiculously awesome if a video document of the tour was released, although i think that might be unrealistic to expect...

I'm gonna have to dig up wherever I read this, but I'm pretty sure I read an interview in which Stew said he had burned every remaining copy of "Rhythmatist." Apparently he still loves the record, but the movie not so much.

Give me a few minutes...I just poured a cup of coffee, so I can sit here and search while it cools...

[update] Well, rat, as my uncle likes to say...I can't find it. Any Google search containing Stew's name yields about a kerbillion hits on various subjects. I'll keep my eyes open for it, or maybe Mr. C will run by here and update us on the status of a Rhythmatist rerelease.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

It would be nice to have it on DVD, even though my VHS copy is still going strong after 20 years.

Amen to the release of the tour footage. I still remember the Chicago show like it was yesterday. "Koteja" was incredible. I had never before witnessed a 12-inch tom take such a beating.

I dubbed my original VHS tape onto DVD for safekeeping. In fact, I think I sent a copy of it (along with an Around the World DVD) to Ian a couple of years ago for the Backstage Cafe theater.

An official release with added footage and commentary would be pretty cool, although I've also read that Stewart is (understandably, in my opinion) a little embarrassed by the quality of the final product. It's a pretty hokey story. But the music is incredible, as well as some of the cinemetography.

Maybe it could be re-cut into a documentary about the making of The Rhythmatist? The true story might be better than the original... There was a film like that a few years ago, but I can't for the life of me remember the title.

Best Regards,

Steve

hey, if george lucas can re-release the "inferior" versions of the original star wars flicks as bonus features to his current versions of the movies... 'nuff said!

i'm a star wars geek too, so let me explain:

the three original star wars movies came out in the late '70s and early '80s. in 1997, lucas released new versions of the movies, with updated effects and some other elements altered, added, or deleted. in 2004, he did it again with even newer versions, which built on the changes from '97. now the original theatrical versions have finally been released as bonus features to the revised versions.

a lot of longtime fans are put off or even outraged by the new versions, as they prefer the movies they remember from their childhood. now, i really admire george lucas-- he is at least equal to stewart in terms of his effect on me as an artist. but even i disagree with some of the changes. my biggest objection was the removal of some of the music from return of the jedi. i don't necessarily despise what was put in place of it, but i do believe the original music was better.

the biggest changes that most diehard fans have issues with are the changes to story. in the new versions of a new hope, greedo shoots at han point blank from across a table and misses, followed by han blasting his enemy. in the original version, greedo doesn't shoot at all. fans object to the change as a knee-jerk pc reactionary bit of skullduggery, claiming that it completely alters han's rogueish character that he let his assassin get a shot off first, especially after he has just announced to han that he's come to kill him. i'm inclined to agree. but my big issue is how the heck does greedo miss at point blank range?

in the newest version of return of the jedi, the actor that portrays anakin's force ghost has been replaced with the actor that played anakin in the most recent two pictures. lucas justifies this by explaining that anakin had reverted to the form he had before turning to the dark side. perhaps this is true, but darth vader's final act was saving his son luke from the machinations of the emporer, which means he actually died while embracing the light side of the force. a more plausible explanation is that if you sit and watch all six films in a row, it may be more of an emotional impact to see the actor we now most closely associate with the anakin role to take his place beside obi-wan and yoda in jedi heaven. i'm not terribly offended by the new version, but either way is fine with me.

i'm pretty sure any new version of the rhythmatist would be vastly different from the original. my point above is that both versions can co-exist side by side in the same release. and stew doesn't even have to worry about negative fan reaction because most people have never even seen the original!

The Rhythmatist soundtrack is my favorite of all of Stewart's cd's. End of story!

I waited 20 years to see the movie - a big thank you to the person who hooked me up!

I think it would make a great documentary also. Ooo - Stewart, do you have any home movies of that shoot, lol?!

Let's get real people. One of the main reasons we love Stewart (besides the drumming) is because of his goofy-ness! His quirky sense of humor and interesting outlook on life is what comes through in the Rhythmatist video. The movie is so much Stewart. No, it's not going to make it into the music documentary hall of fame or whatever, but it's fun to watch if you really get Stewart.

Stewart, don't be so hard on yourself about the Rhythmatist (if this is true). Maybe go back, re-edit it and re-release the way you want it.

We will support you, ok?!
