I was at the NYC signing last Wednesday!

Postby Marshmallow Jones 1 on 18 Sep 2006 14:22

Good lord it's taken me a long while to get back on here, I had to renew my login as I was 'inactive'.
SO...
Last week on my way to work in Jersey City, NJ (across the river from lower Manhattan) I heard Stewart on the 'Opie and Anthony' radio show plugging his DVD. It was a good interview but I didnt hear it all as I had arrived at my office. He told a funny story about when the guys played at Sting's wedding.. Anyway he mentioned before the first commercial break for everyone to come to his DVD signing at the Virgin music store in Union Square which was to be at 6pm that night. I thought, WOW I gotta get there. The deal was you had to buy the DVD and you would get a wristband that would allow you to come back at 6pm and get your DVD signed.
So I went at noon, hoping against hope that there would be any wristbands left. I was so nervous as I approached the counter with my DVD, I asked if there was any wristbands and the guy said 'sure'. I couldnt believe it, I was psyched! I spent hours on here (also emailed giovanni) trying to get my login activated so I could tell my good news and also take any of your questions with me. no luck though.

I came back at about 6:15 pm and the line was not too long, about 30 or 40 people ahead of me. I inched up and finally was next in line. A guy and his girlfriend ahead of me were really milking it though. They asked him to sign about 10 things, then proceeded with questions (the guy asked 'where are you playing tonight' and i thought 'non-fan, he should already know', then they wanted a picture, I was getting annoyed, I think stewart was too, he said 'this big square-jawed gentlemen here is going to throw you guys out soon' (the guy was actually pretty tiny). then it was my turn.

to be continued...

So I stepped up and there was the man himself. So I said hello and asked him to sign my DVD and he proceeded to do so. I told him I was trying to contact people on here to tell them I was coming to the signing so that they could send me in with some some questions but I wasn't able to log in and had contacted Gio. Stew asked me what my handle was and I told him, he looked at me like 'what the hell does that mean?' I told him 'ahh it's kind of a long and dumb story so I wont bother.' Then I thanked him for everything, and said I would see him online. He was very gracious, I wished I could have spoken a bit more but I was a little befuddled (where do you start with the questions) and I didnt want to hold up the line and be a pain. I had purchased a disposable digital camera and got a few snaps including one with myself and stewart, as soon as I get them developed I will get a CD with the jpegs on it and will post them. So it was brief but very very cool.

I wish I had known earlier that he was going to be there, I could have brought a snare head or something else to sign. But hey, a signed DVD from my drumming idol is a pretty cool thing to have.

I just wish I could have told/asked him the following:

-You rock the drums. I have my(Tama Swingstar) kit set up very much like yours, I even play Octobans which are not easy to get a hold of these days. Also recently got a Paiste 22" Dry heavy ride which just sounds fantastic. good choice of drums/cymbals.
-You play Gradenko and KK stuff with Gizmo, why dont you ever play 'On Any Other Day' ? It's about my favorite Police song and would be great live. You can strap on the microphone and belt it out behind the kit.
-The next interviewer who asks you if you're going to get back together with the Police needs a beatdown. badly. You've written umpteen thousand soundtracks and do so many other things, MOVE ON. They dont ask Sting about reunions anymore..
-How many times did you wash your hands after that signing? Some of those NYC musician/hipster types who came in shaking your hand were pretty grungy dudes.

-As far as my dopey username, I was watching a college basketball game in the early 90s and there was a player named Mugabe Jones or similar. There was guy named Matthew Jones on the other team. Then there was another player shown on the TV, i asked my friend if his name was going to be Marhsmallow Jones because he was white and pretty fat. bad joke I know but for some reason we laughted like idiots (may have been the 20 beers in us). So for a while there he called me Marshmallow Jones and it stuck. So now it's my login for everything. Like I said dumb story..

I really liked the movie too, my only issue was that it seemed rushed, I know there's a big story to tell and only so much time, but for some of those sped up shots out hotel room windows and other time-lapsed stuff I felt like he was trying to fit as much stuff in the movie as possible with only a limited time budget. Obviously fans like us could watch 12 hours of that stuff so I guess we can't be too objective. Would have like to hear more from Andy on the commentary, little anecdotes or similar, but then it wasnt his movie.

so sorry for the long post but this has been 5 days since I wanted to write all this...

thanks stewart!

one other thing, you can buy/download the stewart interview on Opie and Anthony's radio show last week. if you go to audible.com and click 'Browse' and then 'Radio TV' you will see a box for Opie and Anthony, click there, sort by date and you can get Sept 13th which was the date of the interview.

Hey fallout, if you have any hookup with Stew's publicist, we're really trying to find out what the signing (and other appearance) schedules are ahead of time. We've found out a few recent U.S. ones after the fact. (This certainly cannot be blamed on Gio/Eugenio of this website, who do a fantastic job with what information they do get.)

To answer your question: No, there is not a comprehensive schedule, that any of us here have discovered.

DotD

Im flattered that you think I could have a hookup with Stews publicist - I dont! The closest I have been to Stew was when I hung outside the Berkeley Amphitheater after failing getting tix for OHead - my mood was Darkness....

I will try to dig a little....

Lovin the forum - a bunch of real fans with real feeling for the music....fo

I only wish. It just seems like luck of the draw whether we find out about these things, at least in the States. I could have possibly made the NYC signing as I was in the city that evening, but didn't hear about it in time to chance my travel plans to get in earlier. :(

I've been thinking about starting a news section on my Stewart site for compiling whatever appearance info *I* find out about in time, but that's generally limited to whatever comes through via yahoo or google alerts.

But at least maybe it would help avoid situations like njfan here who missed the MD Festival on Saturday...

Aw man (rolls eyes...) nearly half of that top link is the usual 'Police reunion' question...

I can't believe Stew is so cool about it. You always feel like this is the first time he's talked about it, when we know he gets asked about it every day of his life.

And the second one ends right before he talks about the Troggs. I wanted to hear that story.

Like sockii, I'm glad someone from the board was able to get to the DVD signing. Great story, Marshmallow.
