Thank You Stewart for bringing GIZMO to the US!

My fellow AUI'ers met up and hung out all day, waiting patiently for the highlight of the day, as GIZMO went on last. We missed some of the other performers as we were hanging around the autograph table much of the day. Conroy and I got autographs from all the other acts. The two guys who went on before GIZMO were SICK! And I got to shake their hands!

As for the headliner:

Wield The Spade was awesome! Can't wait for the next Oysterhead tour!

I never thought I'd hear Koteja or Don't Box Me In live - that was a treat!

I didn't know the songs that were sung in Italian, but they were pretty cool also.

It was an honor to see the Master up close. I had a great seat. I was terrified of driving to Newark - I took the "scenic route" there, and got stuck in traffic on the way home, but I was glad I went. I know it must have been difficult to bring the band over from Italy, but I wanted to let you know I appreciated it.

Thanks dude! :-)

Great Kim for this report, we really appreciate!
Internet gets people so close that distances seem something from the past!

Fantastic!

Kim was right - it was a great show and a excellent day overall.

I've never been to a drum festival before (despite being a lousy amateur drummer myself) so I had no idea what to expect. It was a fun experience, not too unlike the scifi conventions I work, though with tons more free stuff and giveaways. My mom and I got there in time to catch most all of the performances, and we also had pretty good seats, though I would've been happier to be on Stewart's side of the stage - oh well, it was a 50/50 chance. But they had a nice video screen overhead for closeups during the show.

We both really enjoyed Jason McGerr, of Death Cab For Cutie, who did an excellent presentation on technique by starting with just a snare drum on stage and literally having his kit built piece by piece around him. He also demonstrated the difference between playing a song to "show off" and playing it "to keep his job in the band". Interestingly enough, I kind of thought some of the other very (overly?) showy performers that day could have used paying attention to that lesson themselves. There was quite a bit of testosterone oozing off the stage from some of these power-players, if you know what I mean, when I would have rather heard a lot more groove and musicality.

Glenn Kotche of Wilco had an absolutely bizarre kit that was cool for all the different sounds he could make, but his style was a little "out there" for my tastes. Thomas Lang is insane behind the kit, but honestly I wasn't really enjoying his set until the great Luis Conte came out and the two of them started playing off and around each other. That was beyond cool. And I knew I was in a crowd of drummers when - for once - everyone in the room could actually clap in time with the music! :)

Of course, *we* at least were there and waiting to see Gizmo, and the band did not disappoint us fans one bit. I loved the Italian songs that started the set, great energy. As Conroy mentioned, Darkness was a huge treat, a very different arrangement from the GitM version--mom was absolutely grooving on this one, along with Don't Box Me In. Sadly I don't think most of the crowd "got" Weild the Spade, which is a shame because not getting the chance to see Oysterhead before, I was thrilled to hear it. There was another instrumental song after that which I didn't recognize, and then a great, extended version of Koteja.

Couldn't believe it when the set was over already - it just flew by! But then they announced an encore, and since part of the audience had cleared out by then we scooted up for a closer view during Miss Gradenko, which just rocked. My boyfriend (who arrived in time for Gizmo) ran all the way up to the stage and was going on and on afterwards about how crazy it was to get to see Stewart play from just a few feet away.

It was around 8:30 when we finally headed out home...of course, we got lost trying to get out of Newark and nearly ended up in the Lincoln Tunnel, but eventually we made it back to Philly in one piece and so glad we made the trip up to see the show.

Big thanks to Stewart for bringing Gizmo to the States so some of us could at least finally get a taste of the band! I'd really love to hear an album from the group at some point, and of course more live shows, too!

The first Italian song was Louise Hansa, which was the first song from the first Stewart's vault collection. I'm not sure what the second one was, either. Maybe it is is a new composition.

Yeah, I agree it was also great hearing Don't Box Me In and Koteja live in addition to Mrs. Gredenko, the other Police song which they performed for the encore. Wield the Spade was great live with Stewart's onstage theatrics. I would love to have heard Does Everyone Stare, but I don't know if Gizmo has been doing that one. I also liked how Stewart chose songs that had a reggae tinge or injected it into the ones that didn't to have that sound live as it reminded me a lot of the early Police material which made everything seem cohesive by giving the entire show a common musical theme and helped bring everything about Stewart's career full circle. Like I said before, the highlight for me was definitely Darkness, especially with the spacey guitar and moody synthesizer that made me shiver with delight.
I hope those of you in Italy realize what a great treat you are getting with Stewart's annual sonic pilgrimage with this wonderful thing called Gizmo.

The Modern Drummer people had some awesome door prizes and a lot of them to give out which was cool. And Peter Criss from KISS made a brief appearance by giving away one of the door prizes.

But Gizmo's US debut was definitely the perfect night cap for a fun day hanging out with fellow fans and meeting a few new ones. Too bad we couldn't get to meet the Master, Kim in particular who I think I was most excited about that possibility as she proubldy displayed her super cool Stewart Copeland and the Rhythmatists t-shirt; but with the show ran really late and it would have been a mob scene. Plus, I'm sure there were some swanky after party festivities somewhere. Hopefully, Stewart will make an appearance in the NYC area again at a meet and greet and that his US publicist people will do a better job of giving us advance notice about it next time.

Anyway, I hope this isn't the only appearance of Gizmo in the US ever. But if it is, I'm glad I got to witness a rare, historical event like this. And I hope we got to hang together again in person real soon as it is always a blast.

Thanks to all for the reviews. I can't believe Mr. Copeland played in my "backyard" and I missed it! I check out this great site just about every day but I didn't see anything about this NJPAC show. I even listened to "The Master" on two different New York City radio stations last week but heard nothing about it there either...He just talked about Everyone Stares. That documentary is awesome by the way. Anyway, maybe I'll catch Gizmo in Italy next summer. I missed Taranta by one week when I was in Italy this past August. I've had no luck lately.

Oh man! That sucks...I had something similar happen when I read an ad for a Henry Rollins standup show here in town the morning after it happened.

I mean, this is Nashville - there are a billion concerts and events every night of the week. I really try to keep up, but sometimes you just can't. I'm sure my friends in NYC and LA (Chicago? Atlanta?) can relate.

Thanks much for the reviews, guys. It's almost as good as being there, knowing the SC.net contingent represented. ;)

I'm incredibly jealous of all you people. No offence! Thanks for giving insight to what you saw and felt...although it makes it worse! Do any of you have photos, sound clips, anything to share??

Oh boy, THIS is a heck of a note! On October 8, there's a double bill in Melbourne: the mighty Paul Kelly and - get this - the Hoodoo Gurus.

Hub and I were talking seriously about going over. It's not the money as much as it is Hub's vacation time...we may make it, but if you know anybody in Melbourne (or if you're there yourself), I'd pay good money for a recording of that show.

(Believe it or not, I'm as huge a Paul Kelly geek as I am a SC fan...I've seen him live seven or eight times, including once in Australia, and I own both the US and Oz releases of all his albums. Thank heavens for redeye.com.au. And Qantas, so I can at least visit every couple of years...

It's amazing how few people realize there's such an awesome music scene Down Undah...)

Nope, no photos. I had my Axim PDA with me and tried recording the audio it, but the sound was way too distorted. They recorded everything and will be releasing a two disc (I believe) 7-hour DVD compilation in January of next year for about $50, at least according to the info they had in the sack of crap they gave everybody. I don't have it handy, but I'll post the website about the upcoming DVD when I get a chance to go through all the crap that was in the bag. Hopefully they'll have all of the Gizmo performance on there.

I'm kicking myself for not stopping to get Jeff Seitz's autograph when I was leaving the concert hall as he was at the soundboard and we walked right past him. He looked busy and I didn't want to disturb him. We weren't sure if Stewart was going to come out and do autographs, so I was torn between the two.
