considering the fact I change the records I play (mainly in my car) almost every week, right now I'm getting crazy for CARS soundtrack, the movie from Pixar about cars. There is a great song from Sheryl Crow, but the rest of the soundtrack is really great with mainly rock and country tracks.

I also got the 'new' REM collection from IRS years (the best era for my tastes), and ...let me see...I got a couple of classical cd's....of course Police cd's.....I got Marilyn Manson greatest hits....and something else I don't remember right now.

i don't listen to that many artists, but the ones i do i usually geek out about and get everything they've ever done. a big exception is guided by voices, whose output was so overwhelming that i'm waiting a while before i pick up any more. i'm under the impression i already have the best ones anyway.

right now, i'm kind of obsessed with bob marley. for years i was content to mostly just listen to the box set, but for some reason this year it sunk in just how... GREAT he was. i've picked up ten discs from his catalog so far this year, with another fourteen or so to go in the near (as near as i can afford!) future. i'm even starting to check out his kids' stuff.

in a similar vein, this year i picked up on an artist who seems to be following in bob's footsteps: matisyahu! he should be of interest to police fans, too, as he has a cover of one of their tunes available for free download on yahoo and references them in a song on his new studio album. sucks that his self-released debut is impossible to find now...

genesis stays at or near the top of the rotation. pink floyd is kind of a new favorite, as it took me a long while to finally appreciate them. helmet has a new album out. i'm hoping it doesn't suck like the last two pretty much have.

beck, public enemy, primus/claypool, john williams, traffic, U2, james brown, NIN, led zeppelin, and some DHR bands round out most of my listening.

I have bought very few newly released CDs so far this year, so I've been mainly listening to stuff on my iPod in shuffle mode. Among my favorites are some of the Bellydance CD's that Barbara recommended when the Bellydance Superstars came here in the spring (I can't wait for them to come back in November so I can purchase more). I'm always looking to discover hidden, lost gems. It's not people downloading mp3s that is the bane of the music industry, but the lack of outstanding talent in a sea of mediocrity.

PB, I'd love to get my hands on a copy of one of your comps. Walter Egan lives here in Nashville, I ran into him in Target not that long ago.

I have an enormous 1970s collection. Not sure why, since I've also got plenty of Brazilian techno, tons of alternarap and funk, and various rock compilations. A good friend of hub's and mine runs a record store, so we're usually stocked up on new releases, too.

My husband is the hugest Guided by Voices fan you'll ever find, so let me know if you need me to find out anything about their releases. Bob Pollard came in my friend's record store here a couple months back and I thought he and my husband would drool on themselves...I'll grant you, it's a pretty damn good band.

I keep thinking Wilco will put out a new release sometime soon. They're about due.

OK, maybe this now: What were the best records out this year? I really like that James Hunter record. It sounds like 1960s soul music but it's a new release. I guess I keep babbling about Neko Case, but I really love her. Oh, and that new Les Claypool is a gift that keeps on giving...

i should have mentioned mr. bungle, secret chiefs and squarepusher above, as they're some of my seminal influences. i inserted my head into a dark, blinding crevice some years back when i began creating my own music. that, coupled with a huge disdain for the music industry at large has caused me to really just not pay attention for the last few years. i had been reduced to just getting new stuff from old favorites, or picking up old stuff i'd avoided before. so it was a breath of fresh air a few months ago when i actually purchased and enjoyed matisyahu's "youth", which i guess gets my vote for best release of the year. i have the new claypool album, but it's taking its time growing on me. i still need to get the frog brigade stuff. whamola!!
