I dunno, sock - I think georgygirl has a point. Could be just plain fear that's keeping ol' Stingo away from the other guys. Stewart's now won five Grammies - and is playing with the mighty Les Claypool, whose new album is among my favorites this year; and Andy's recording all kinds of cool stuff with various artists, as well as writing books and exhibiting photography, so the pressure would be on for sure.
And it's too bad, really, because you figure somewhere Sting's still got it in him - the talent that resulted in songs like 'Invisible Sun', or 'One World'. It's just that now he's playing lute music, and a lot of his recent product is really overly precious and not in a good way. Although - hey! Waitaminnit - maybe the lute music record is a return to traditional forms like jazz and blues that Andy has been exploring so nicely the last few years. I won't hold my breath, but maybe he is going some direction other than attempts to corner the same market that's providing us with the likes of Clay Aiken and the Backstreet Boyzzz.
I was kind of appalled to note the headline on his official website as of last night was that same tired story about him having sex for 15 hours, and there was a prominent link to some boring article about his wife having introduced Madonna to her husband and going on about their five mansions and general fabulousness...Yeck. You'll notice Stewart and Andy talk about their work, and who they're recording with and their influences, instead of how wonderful they are personally. Sigh. (Although I would like to know a little more about various Police offspring, since there are a baker's dozen of them, and whether any of them plan to rock out any time soon. Stewart did say in an interview a couple of his kids have musical talent...my dream is that one of them will hook up with Sean Lennon...)
Oh well. What are you going to do (besides go see Gizmo and Oysterhead, and buy Andy's book that comes out this fall?) In a way, we're really lucky that all the guys are still so productive and that we're here talking about their recent work, not something they put out twenty years ago.
(In other news, though - got out my old vinyl copy of 'Zenyatta' this morning and was amused to notice Sting wearing a t-shirt from a club near me in Nashville, the Exit-In. Noticed a couple Nashville segments in 'Everyone Stares,' also. Guess I was just remembering how much I used to adore him, and how pissed at him I got when he started putting out songs that rocked about 1/10 as much as anything he did with Andy/Stewart.)
