I don't think I would be as interested in them, if they were ugly. Hey I'll admit it.

A cute/handsome/hot image was very important to The Police sucess, especially on Sting's...

Anyway the power and quality of its music make the long lasting sucess of The Police.

Sure their look was incredibly important; Stewart told me that when they came back from their second US tour, their look got the attention of some 'teen' magazines and from that moment their songs started being broadcated in UK very easily and teenagers started listening to them....
...and we all know how important is the look...we can see incredible good bands that go nowwhere just because they don't 'look good'....

Well ever since MTV bands faces are everywhere, before that the only time pepole saw them was at a convert.

Like JFK and the first television broadcasted presidentail debate...he looked allot better, and that helped him win.

Yeah, but now we're in hell: the only way any artist gets airplay in the U.S. any more is to look attractive. You simply don't hear quality music on the radio, since the airwaves are full of dreck by the likes of Brittney Spears. Maybe things are some better in other countries. Anyone have an opinion?

Honestly? Sure those guys were and are cute as hell, but their albums are frigging amazing. Was just listening to some Oysterhead earlier, which is fantastic, and I maintain a lot of the work on Outlandos, Regatta and the others was really ahead of its time.

Plus, I listen to a lot of artists who aren't terribly picturesque. Favorites include Mike Watt - a really talented bassist; an Australian artist named Paul Kelly; Mike Doughty...The only one I can think of who's really attractive is Neko Case, and she's not a hottie in the traditional sense. She drives many men I know mad with desire, though.

What is it with Andy? He's 10 years older then Stewart, yet he never looked it...not in thoes days.

When I was younger, the look really mattered, much more then it does to me now.

Like with Sting, I thought he was hot, so I payed much more attention to him then I otherwise would have. Which lead to The Police.... and oh they were so cute! (Don't get me wrong, I love the music it's self...)

You grow out of it though, it's like listening to Nsync, just because JC was so cute. Even though the music was....bleh.

Stewart really did avoid all the funny outfits and such that I laugh at now. Like Sting's dinasour outfit! Ah I love that one. He hever had a corny mustache.....I just don't get why people thought growing a fuzzy thing under there nose would look good. It looks like they glued a hairy slug under their nose.

I had a crush on JC too when I was around 14. That's so weird.
Although Nsync might be a bit embarrassing to have listened to when younger, I'm now, as an adult musician, liking JC's soloprojects.
JC's a huge Police fan, you know.
He has this song on his album that's called "Everything You Want" which he's admitted is only influenced by The Police. Everytime I hear it I think it sounds like a modern popversion of a Police song.

Well, the odds of my meeting any really famous person in any meaningful way are pretty slim, so I guess I spend most of my time thinking about other things, tell you the truth. Sorry if that's boring.

That's a great list, Georgy. Mostly I listen to artists you can't hear on the radio (since many U.S. radio stations are owned by only one or two companies and have very small playlists). I could make another list of homely recording artists who make terrific albums, but it would likely contain many musicians or bands none of you have heard of - Seu Jorge, the Old Crow Medicine Show, Steve Earle, Glossary, Guided by Voices, the New Pornographers...all great musicians, none likely to appear on the cover of GQ or Vogue magazines any time soon. :)

Honestly? I'm more a fan of Stewart's because he's really intelligent, says interesting things in the press, and keeps releasing fantastic records. I bet he's a great person to get to know, but as we live thousands of miles apart, I'm not likely to discover whether that's true or not.

I admit I lost track of Sting some years ago because, much as I love the Police, I never admired his solo work quite so much. It's not terrible, it's just not as good as any single Police record in my opinion. Plus after a while, all you heard about was Sting the Celebrity Icon, which seemed to overshadow the music and got boring quickly for me.

I like Andy's work also....what's not to admire? Any album Andy's ever done is miles better than anything I'm likely to hear on the radio, that's for sure.

You would never believe how important music really is to me! You would think a lay person would never understand but I get it...I really, really get it. Sometimes it dawns on you at night, but you understand it finally and it's purpose is clear. Music is a great thing and communicates a great deal if you listens carefully.

I was like 8 or 9 years old when Michael Jackson's [i]Thriller[/i] album came out and I had the hugest crush on him. I had all these stickers with photos of him on them that I stuck all over my room. I grew out of that crush only a couple of years later though. Now he doesn't look so good, to put it mildly...

Were you born in the 80s? I was born in 74 but I always refer to myself as an 80s child because I grew up during that decade and will always love the music. I don't really remember the 70s.
