The guitar genius of Stew

I'm sorry, but can you really picture our Stewart in a long red cape and blue tights? He's really cute but that look just wouldn't work for him. :P I'm glad he just sticks to his usual dress code. He looks really good that way. Reeaaalllly good.

I so can picture him in a red cape and blue tights!

...he's running around the room with his hands outstretched infront of him going "wooooshhhhhh".
“...and er, did anyone try just pushing this little red button?”

For me

Postby georgygirl on 21 Apr 2006 07:30

Stewart when he is doing anything but not playing music, is Klark Kent, but when I see him playing (In a video or DVD of course) he turns into Superman. Yes, yes, yes.

I don't want to be that literal thinking Stewart is the same personage as Superman of comics.

His personage is just a metaphor or Clark Kent, cause he really is Klark Kent, and not Superman, but he is SuperMusicMan

I hope you can understand my fantasy... :P

My favorite Stewart Copeland guitar part is from "Don't Box Me In" with Stan Ridgeway for Rumblefish.

I love the lead in riff and the best Police style part is after the vocal "Let Go!"...wamp, wamp,wamp...and a really great bass riff underneath.

Give it another listen and really check out the guitar and bass parts.

Fantastico !!!!

Cheers. (now back to talking about Stewart dressed in tights!).

they are welcome to, right after i mention my own fav stew "guitar god" moment.

ironically, its not on any album, but on one of the remixes of gong rock that were available only on a 12" promo single. its pretty much the same riff as the album version, but can be heard more prominently, with fewer other song elements cluttering it up.

Stewart worked a liittle bit of that Gong Rock 12" remix into an episode of the Equalizer. I think it was the one that had Adam Horowitz from the Beastie Boys in it.

a frickin' men. It's intense.

How about the bass at the end of the extended version of "Don't Box Me In"? Sweet.

Hmmm

Given that I'm completely obsessed with Oysterhead right now (along with a couple other records: the new Neko Case; Nick Lowe, as always), my favorite moment may be him just beating the hell out of the kit on my bootleg of "Mr. Oysterhead." Well, and getting to see him do it live was just indescribable.

(Although I'm just not sure he'll ever beat swapping hats with Andy during the 'Every Little Thing' video...and dancing on the mixing board.)

I have both the black and green vinyl ep's, but alas, none of the singles and still no CD.

To this day, it remains my Stewart Copeland "Desert Island" album.

Has anyone checked out the inner sleeve photos on the A & M 1980 version? Is Stew wearing a mask, or is it really lousy makeup and that cheesy grin? And what's up with the ice cave background? I've had this theory for years that it's the Hoth Rebel Base in The Empire Strikes Back.

One more thing and I'll shut up -

Listen to the guitar on "Out of Bounds", especially the solo after the middle 8.

Last but not least, the piano solo on Animal Logic's "Elijah."
Yes he is the Messiah of the drum kit.

But what of his guitar? Simple, catchy, pop? Maybe so. But engaging, fun and simple doesn't mean it isn't genius.

I had the good fortune of an older brother who exposed me to good music. In my formative years (80s) he exposed me to many bands but The Police were his fave. One day circa 1987, he brought home an album and left it in his car, and the outer edge was warped so bad that the needle caught air on the first ~2 tracks on either side. This album was Klark Kent, I took it from him and for about 10 years only dreamed of hearing Away from Home, Guerilla and My Old School... I asked about the album in record stores on occasion, gave up and one day asked in what must have been about 1999. The computer found the CD Re-Release (with NEW TRACKS!) and I promptly ordered it. It was later lost in a car crash and an email to Stewart's old email address got a copy... but that's another story and that's my story hehe.
Well I definitely dig his guitar work but I was kinda blown away for a minute when I read your story about the record. I had the record when I was a junior in high school and for a minute couldn't remember what happened to it. Then I remembered I gave it to my best friend. But as much as I love music, leaving a record in my car is something that could have happened.
I do have Klark Kent Kollected Works on C.D. thankfully.
