It's so heartening to know this. There is a similar approach to the experimental treatments for bladder cancer (no. 1 in the UK, my mother is not English but has it). The need to strengthen the immune system instead of poisoning ppl with chemo (local chemo did not work for my mom, btw) is genius.

Going through hell is exactly how it feels, a sense of total uselessness and heartwrenching worry. But new and experimental treatments give you the dose of daily hope you need.

My mom started chemo a few days later she was dead.

That's sad to hear. I had someone extremely close to me go through chemo and it was not an experience I would not wish on anyone. On the brighter side, the chemo was stopped because the person could not tolerate it and then an alternate (but very expensive) treatment was done. And the alternative treatment probably was far more effective than we could have hoped. It was a treatment that was not yet FDA approved when chemo was started. So there is hope with new treatments every day.

My sympathies as well, PFan.

Very interesting to hear some of the treatment info that Lynne mentioned.

At some point I think the woman in charge at MIF might drop in to provide us with some melanoma prevention information. Always good to raise awareness and possibly curtail problems before they start.

I think medical science has done a lot to make chemo less horrific in the past few years. But it's still tough.

Yes redheads are at risk by the way. All the girls in my derms office wear shirts that say "Pale is the new tan."

I use Mystic Tan now. If I don't I am almost invisible. :cry:

Yeah, being Irish and redhead...I am in the high risk category. I have had it put into my head in childhood years to wear sunscreen. I am better at just wearing clothes to cover myself, but at least I try to do something to protect myself from the sun. Esp here in Vegas. As a child, I got a few horrible sunburns and one time got one so bad I was treated in a burn unit of a hospital. We went raftin and our gear went downstream as our cannoe capsized and went down river..in that was my sunscreen. I had put some on, but of course you need to reapply.It took us 45 mins to get back to camp...well needless to say I ended up with 2nd degree burns on my back. OUCH. Since then, I really try to keep a bottle in reach at all times. My kids get covered before leaving the house as do I. I look for makeup to have spf something in it as well. Forget wearing shorts. I would blind anyone around me. Self tanners make me look orange. I am THAT pale. Almost albino like. Sad.
