I was at 1984 Civic Center show in San Francisco. It wasn't the "real" Clash because Mick Jones had already been kicked out by then. But it was an amusing show for this quote by Joe Strummer:

"This is punk meets reggae. Not white reggae. We add some of our own culture to it, so this is no ripoff. I'm talking to you Sting!"

Shortly before Strummer died, however, his feelings toward Sting changed a bit. He said, "Hey, I remember seeing Sting giving his all in a little punk club for a tiny audience who really dug it. He has as much right to punk as anybody."

And when told the Police were being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (along with the Clash) he said, "Good, so they're in too. Do you think everyone's gonna play?"

Love the clash & the pistols, its just a pity the pistols were so fucked about, not to mention fucked up. But hey, thats rock and roll. The Bollocks was, er, the bollox. Talk about kicking ass. If only the pistols could have held it together for another couple of albums. The pistols were more honest than the clash. Tend to agree with what Mr Lydon has been saying about Sting. Sting is just amazing but he has been a bit boring on stage so far. Come on Mr Sting, wake up and get some fuckn nrg. If you want to do yoga do it but give yourself some uppers before you go on stage...........I can understand why Johnny Lydon has been saying these things..............

I never, ever understood why the sex pistols got so much attention for so long after their 15 minutes of fame - beyond the fact that they were pissing all over the status quo, and being promoted (literally) to death as counter-culture. There are far, far, better punk bands from the same time. (One at least from Brisbane for fucks sake). There is an energy there, but it seemed contrived to me. I don't love The Clash, but I understand why they grab people. They had something to say.

The 'saggy...carcasses' comment made me laugh, because it missed the point by a country mile. As it happens, nobody is playing like a saggy anything. It is hugely funny that 30 years down the line, someone is still trying to slate this band for not being 'punk' enough.

I've always loved the fact that the police did the ultimate anti-establishment shimmy feint. Take a genuine 'tear it all down' scene, which to my mind was not exemplified by the pistols, jump on that bandwagon for 10 minutes, and as a result get yourself into a situation where you can make the music you want to make. What is more 'punk' than that?

Frankly, what is more punk than -' Fuck it, I'll do an opera.'. Just because you can.

I'm going to get shouted at for this I'm sure ;-)

I was talking about the Poilce gig in Torino with a guy who was there too.
Then he said he went to London to learn English as a little kid in 1977 and saw: Clash, Damned and the Police at some club in Soho.
Then again the Police in Milano with Cramps, and then again a couple of times before they broke up. I mean!!!!!

I don't believe in all that anarchy bollocks - Joe Strummer 1977

The both had different messages. Whereas the pistols said fuck everything and were hell bent on destroying everything - the clash said yes, everythings fucked up. But it can be changed and it's worth fighting for.

There was no need for a second Pistols album. They did it all in one. I can't think of any other band that released one album, called it a day, and had that much influence on music. The album may sound tame by todays punk standards but then again - there wouldn't be any punk standards without that album.
