I never, ever understood why the sex pistols got so much attention for so long after their 15 minutes of fame - beyond the fact that they were pissing all over the status quo, and being promoted (literally) to death as counter-culture. There are far, far, better punk bands from the same time. (One at least from Brisbane for fucks sake). There is an energy there, but it seemed contrived to me. I don't love The Clash, but I understand why they grab people. They had something to say.
The 'saggy...carcasses' comment made me laugh, because it missed the point by a country mile. As it happens, nobody is playing like a saggy anything. It is hugely funny that 30 years down the line, someone is still trying to slate this band for not being 'punk' enough.
I've always loved the fact that the police did the ultimate anti-establishment shimmy feint. Take a genuine 'tear it all down' scene, which to my mind was not exemplified by the pistols, jump on that bandwagon for 10 minutes, and as a result get yourself into a situation where you can make the music you want to make. What is more 'punk' than that?
Frankly, what is more punk than -' Fuck it, I'll do an opera.'. Just because you can.
I'm going to get shouted at for this I'm sure
