Tour Countdown II: Europe Strikes Back

Postby animal on 26 Aug 2007 16:04

David Bowie's Heroes at the tribute concert was just amazing.

It also sounded really good at the sound check, as we all waited outside Wembley. All different nationalities singing "we could be heroes".

Get goosebumps everytime.

I read that Brian May just got his doctrate in astrophysics. Wow.

Regarding Bowie, I really liked his performance of America at the 9/11 show despite the fact that live he really screwed up the first verse. In the DVD of the show, the fixed it and played 9/11 film footage to cover up the mistake.

I lthought Heroes was ok, but my problem is that it has just gotten so overplayed. Its kind of like Bowie's Roxanne. Also, live, his guitarists never seem to get the Fripp guitar line quite right. Even when it was Adrian Belew. King Crimson has played Heroes live in concert, and Fripp showed that he can still nail his guitar part.

I have seen Belew live in the Sound and Vision Tour of 1990, and his version was on a par with Fripp live. He is a freaking monster on guitar.
Agree on Heroes. Still, when you hear it live and you're there, you cry your eyes out. He has such a huge catalog and there are some amazing song he rarely sings.
I have seen Bo 5 times and every time it was a totally different concert, different songs, different bands, same Kalypso up on the chair an in tears...
Bowie occasionally screws up lyrics and starts songs, then decides he does not want to do them live. It reassures you, because you know he is Human.
I remember at one of his concerts I was with some friends, all equally crazy about Bo. One of them looked at the megascreen and shouts "GUYS, HE SWEATS!!!!!"
"Loa-ded, and ready for a-ction! [wink]"

Bowie NEVER get the lyrics to Heroes right. However, he has been making the same mistakes in the lyrics for about 20 yrs. So maybe he decided on a new version of the lyrics that he likes better. (On the LP, it starts "I. I will be king." Live, he always goes, "I. I wish I could swim.")

A Reuters link from Animal
has inspired today's crap verse
noting how oft the facts say one thing
while too many articles say the reverse.

Ad infinitum will Stew be disaster-quoted;
to think less is a losing fight.
But damn people -- have the decency
to get the details right.

So here's a little Cheat Sheet
for folks too lazy to fact-check
of those damn annoying errors
that recur continually in the dreck.

Take for instance the most obvious --
as I've said, this makes me insane --
if you're going to go misquoting,
learn to spell your source's name.

It's "S-T-E-W-A-R-T" as in Jimmy
and "S-T-E-W-A-R-T" as in Jon;
if you spell it like the Queen of Scots
you are absolutely wrong.

The "Disaster Gig" was NOT opening night.
He makes it plain in his screed:
S-T-E-W-A-R-T says it's the "second show."
Are those words so hard to read?

Andy is not 120,
nor is Sting the youngest in the band.
(But since they're such an easy target,
I'll grant some leeway on Stew's headbands.)

S-T-E-W-A-R-T did not work for Dennis Miller;
that was Andy Summers.
Hell, if you want to talk disaster gigs,
that job must have been a bummer.

When S-T-E-W-A-R-T gets all crazy-eyed
that does not mean he's mad;
those myriad drum faces onstage
don't equate to strife in the triad.

Nor does it mean he's "death warmed over"
because he is sweating in the heat;
nor if he closes his eyes to play
does it mean he's gone to sleep.

And if you think he's looking tired,
well hell, what the bleep?
The rigors of that nightly workout
would make an Olympian weep.

A new leg of tour approaches,
which likely means another "disaster gig."
But BFD, that's not news;
that's inevitable with this touring shindig.

Had S-T-E-W-A-R-T not shared some laughs with us,
no one would have given a fig.
Writers might have even had to write something
rather than selectively prig.

So hey, Europe, listen
cuz I'm going to give it to you straight:
some shows aren't going to be perfect;
a couple might not even be great.

But I would bet some serious money
and a couple of lame-ass rhymes
that the vast majority of shows
are going to be an incredible time.

Cuz when they're in the groove,
the results are just sublime.

The Police are reunited;
they'll be in your towns real soon;
just watch the audience react
when the gong and Sting begin to croon.

Even when the band screws up,
they cause grown men to swoon.

So please pass along some pointers
to your European press
that it's okay to get the facts right,
to show such journalistic largesse;

that it's even okay to write a story
without mentioning the disaster post;
although I guess the likelihood's higher
of shaking hands with Shakespeare's ghost.

But at the very least, please ask them
to spell their names the right way:
cuz S-T-E-W-A-R-T is taking Stockholm
in ONLY TWO MORE DAYS!!!
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Doggerel of the Day

Postby DirtyMartini on 28 Aug 2007 14:42

Yo, Europe! Yes, you!
But one more setting sun
'til The Trio reappear your way.
In honor I've blendered Tennyson.

Our Ulysses has sailed the dark broad seas
with those mariners he has brought,
who for decades apart and together
have toil'd and wrought and thought.

But their purpose holds today
to beat out music and maraud,
a pastime not unbecoming
such men that strove with gods.

For roaming with hungry hearts
much have they known, much have they seen.
With North America now conquered,
a newer, older world they seek
to smite the sounding furrows
and become part of all they meet.

From that gong hit, they will move you
beyond the utmost bound of human thought,
carrying you to unknown places
and to lives that you'd forgot.

All things new, all things familiar;
the long day wanes, the slow moon climbs,
as you pay meet adoration
by screaming back all Stingo's rhymes
and hoot for Andy's virtuosity
gleaned over limitless lifetimes.

And then, of course, there's Stewart
not least, but honored of them all;
with his rhythmic bolts of thunder
and cymbal murmurs of snowfall.

Together sail beyond the sunset
to the last splash of the encore
for now is your opportunity
to carpe well your slice of tour.

So gather together, Sisters and Brothers,
in drunk delight for The Police,
and raise a glass for all Copelandia,
drink this life to the lees.

For neither you nor I nor Stewart
are still kids of tender cheek,
but as ol' Alfie once said -- well,
I'll let a real bard have his speak:

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

I like Tennyson. Even if he doesn't count down well.

Doggerel of the Day

Postby DirtyMartini on 29 Aug 2007 14:09

I realized hours too late that I somehow forgot to end yesterday's doggerel with numbers and screaming. D'oh. So here's a quick round of mindless screaming to celebrate The Police's Back to Europe Day.

Today! Today! O frabjous day!
Today! Today! Callooh! Callay!

The Police return again again!
The Police return today, my friend!

In Stockholm Stewart bangs his gong!
In Stockholm Stingo sings his song!

In Stockholm Andy's fingers wag!
In Stockholm Lara waves that Flag!

Then Europe next is coming soon!
So Europe should be over the moon!

To England! Germany! Switzerland!
Denmark! Austria! Netherlands!

To Portugal! France! Spain! Wales!
Belgium! Italy! Ireland they sail!

After a couple of months and thirty years,
all of Europe will soon be driven to tears.

The whole continent reduced to one big throb
of ecstatic joy and nameless sob.

For Sweden is only but the start!
Stewart Claus has come to eat your heart!

Remember when you enter his lair
there are many ways to use a snare.

So eat your peas and make your bed
and scream and sing til off's your head.

But today! Today! O frabjous day!
Stewart aims his stare at Lara May!

So everyone raise a glass and cry
for that music which will sear the sky.

Nancyrose reports lovely weather.
Everyone say this last bit together:

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish!
The Police are back TODAY, BITCH!!!!
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
