Hi guys, I don't know if this has been posted before, but I just came across a Last Exit song on YouTube which is an early version of So Lonely. It has a bit of a jazz, rock, and funk fusion. The video is just a police montage.

I just got a "boot" from a buddy with a bunch of Last Exit songs...I like it a lot.

The music during the verses is actually pretty good, though it sounds fairly typical of that era. The chorus music doesn't belong in that song, however - I was laughing the first 2 times i listened to it. The drums and chord progression in that chorus sound like Paid Programming from the 80s and 90s ... plain awful!! Listen to those fills, all you drummers!!! Lmao

I think of it this way. If you have played music or were in a band...listen to YOUR very, very early stuff....for rough early demo's Sting was really good, still is. That's why Copeland noticed him, amazing how an artist evolves.

and in defence of Stingo...the LUTE album is a Fucking masterpiece.

White Lily Grow? is one of the best love songs I have ever heard...written 400 years ago? Wow!...maybe it just because I am a struggling songwriter. I learned it by ear on the acustic guitar and I am amazed by how he (R Johnson) out it together.

I could never just dismiss something that took great efforts to sing and learn to play lute. He really impresses me as an artist.

and I'm a drummer. heh,heh.

you know BB... i am ashamed to say that i have knocked sting's lute stuff and i haven't even given it a good listen. i checked out samples and left it at that. now, i will reserve judgement on the lute until i listen to the whole disc.

early on I took a few shots at him too.

- then he got The Police back together.

- then I saw the DVD part of Labyrinth on TV on PBS (kinda explained it)

- then I saw the Police twice.

- then I read Broken Music.

He's Cool.

Since he has returned to the happy Police frontman who I always dug as a young musician...I decided to give him all my respect, again.

To be honest, when I really study and listen to his work...I am amazed, he is an easy target for people. I have even MORE respect for him because ...he doesn't care. He is a true musician, all about the music.

just read what Stewart has said about him.

Oh, I'm not knocking Sting's writing at all (for anyone who might think that), heh, just having a little fun. His songwriting abilities, to me, are on par with Stewarts drumming ability. Add the great voice and basslines he writes, AND the fact that he can play both at the same time (sometimes with different rhythms) - nothing but respect. Thats why its good to joke every now and then (and this was more about the drummer's playing and his sound during that part). I would love to hear more Last Exit, if anyone has more links ...

ok... where do i read the stewart comments about sting?

i know what you are saying.... confession: i stayed sting fan after the police broke up - gasp!

i saw him on tour several times up to and including mercury falling.

i love his music up to and including mercury - nothing like the sun and the soul cages being my favs.
his cover of little wing is awesome live.

but, i lost it when i found that all signs pointed to him being selfish and breaking up the band - although now, it was probably for the best. they hadn't been able to really work together for at least the last 2 albums and i'm not sure they could have held it together for a 6th. now, they are "healing" and together for as long as they deem possible and i guess i have sting to thank for that, but not as much as the fans, stewart & andy. do you really think sting would have done it if there wasn't such demand? or if the other two weren't so interested? i'm not sure what his true motives were, but i guess it doesn't matter because they are here and we are one big happy family again.

I read something in either the MOJO mag article or over at TPT where they have some interviews to read.

I stopped "really" following Sting solo after Dream od the Blue Turtles (buying the CD's, shows etc). I heard his hits and liked them but that was it.

That's why music is so cool...one person hates it, the other worships it !

This Last Exit music floored me. This is what it made me think.
I had always wondered what was with the damn HIGH VOICE.
Where did that come from. Is it Punk...well no. But somehow it sounds punk when Sting does it. Is it like Screaming, angst? Perhaps. I always wondered Why???
It can grate your nerves but it does get the blood flowing, just like Stewarts drums. So I say it is his punk, his version.
I can't sing high at all and always compared myself to the singer of my fav group. It's killer for Pop chorus'.

Now I see he didn't do that before the police, at least not on this tune.
Forgive me but this IS a Sting thread, so I'll continue.
It seems it was contrived to get something NEW.
Now I'm more impressed and less intimidated. That slick jazzy generic sound is good...but mediocre. We'd have never known of Sting that way.

Maybe the HIGH VOICE was Stewarts idea or even Andy. Notice Fallout doesn't have it (the days of Henry). Sting sure did use it on VIDEO MAGIC project with Eberhard Schoener. (I Love that Album) Maybe this was after he 'discovered it' Food for thought and debate.

A lot of people say that if it wasn't for Sting, the Police would not have been successful. However, to me, Last Exit shows that that belief is not true. Sting, Stewart, and Andy all raised each other's game, and the success of the Police was really the result of the magic mix of all three rather than just one lead member running the show.
