Regret reviews for GeorgyGirl

GeorgyGirl is the top poster on this forum by about 800 posts. 800! Only a handful here have 800 posts total. So I think she deserves a something once in awhile.

Anway, I have noticed that even before the Anthology came out, she has made numerous posts asking everyone what they think of the song Regret, the last song on the disc, but with really no response. Her last inquiry was yesterday. So I figured I should start a post collecting our thoughts on the song for her.

I actually already made mini comments but I will add some for our GG. Regret is an odd track as it is mainly piano with no percussion. It is a beautiful little piano piece which is surprising since Stewart reveals in the liner notes that it isn't really him playing but just the computer (the box) that he essentially programmed. Technology is certainly a wonder in that it can render something so full of emotion just through programming. But in this case, I think its more than technology. I think its just the magic that SC is able to bring to his songs. At first, I was thinking that it acted like a good sorbet to clear the aural palate after the bombardment of the prior track (the awesome Gizmo song). But the more I think aobut it, I think its more like a fine, after dinner cognac to slowly sip and enjoy after a fantastic meal at a three star restaurant.

As an aside, all the evidence seems to tell me that this song is from the Japanese anime from 2001. However, I would think that Gio would have the definite answer. So Gio, if you can shed some light on this . . .

Georgy, if you can remember back to the days of the first set of songs in the Vault, you may remember hearing Regret there first. I'm still puzzled by its origins, i.e. what project it may have been composed for. Conroy thinks its an Equalizer episode, but it seems that the show itself would have been sited if that were the case, as opposed to an episode title. Here's hoping Gio can perhaps shed some light.

I want to go home and listen to the original posted version plus the one on the cd to check for any differences. I will then share my impressions!

When the first set of tunes from Stewart's vault were posted on here, there was a link that had some footnotes Stewart wrote about each tune. I wonder if Eugenio or Gio has them archived somewhere. I remember vividly that it mentioned that Stewart had composed it for the Equalizer. Also, some of Stewart's music has shown up in other movies. I know the music from Trend: He Has Heart from Talk Radio showed up in another movie Stewart composed (I believe it was either Taking Care of Business or Airborne) almost exactly like it did from Talk Radio, so that could very well be the case with Regret. And I think I remember something from the Rhythmatist showing up in Babylon 5 pilot. It is common for film score composers to re-use stuff like that.

Listened to it in the car on the way home.

Very stylish piece on the piano. Way too short though at 1 minute 4 secs.

Liner notes say it comes from Metropolis.

I do hear an understated majesty in Regret, mainly noting Stewart's ambition to write something more symphonic using the theme. I can imagine a swell of strings bringing this to fuller life very easily! Such a version is bound to be quite a bit longer to boot...

The version i have at home is the same, tho the released disc is of higher quality.

Yes, Stewart definitely does reuse his themes. There is that Equalizer tune incorporated into Holy Blood. I think the Ewoks theme may have been lifted from the Rhythmatist also!
