David Lee Roth's Police Bashing

David Lee Roth's Police Bashing

Postby Howstupidmrbates on 14 Aug 2007 12:55

Yesterday at the press conference to announce their tragically misguided "reunion" tour, Van Halen circus performer David Lee Roth blasted The Police. He said this is a new band, not an old band playing old songs. He said "This ain't The Police!" As much as I loved the crazy old version of VH in the 80's, I lost all respect for Diamond Dave yesterday. He said when "older bands regroup to tour, it's usually rockers with walkers. Not us." Ok DLR, let's see you do one of those infamous kicks in 2007. Yea, though so. And what about your voice? Sting could sing you off the planet any day. Without Micheal Anthony you're lost "Diamond" Dave.

The Police always and forever.

Yeah, here I am driving in my car to get some lunch when they did their press conference. I almost wrecked my car. I stopped at a light and I am cussing at my radio so upset at this comment. :x

Well here is one for Diamond Dave...
Suck my tube socks buddy.

Sorry, but hello. What an absolute Jerk. Not cool.

OK, hang on --

Let me first say that I couldn't give a shit about David Lee Roth. Never did; never will. Think he's lousy; always did; always will. I have no interest in the man whatsoever.

BUT

As far as I've seen, he didn't bash The Police. I didn't hear the conference, but all the articles that I've seen say that he said, "It's not like the Police - we're not going to do one tour." I seriously doubt that VH will last more than one tour (if that long), so maybe that comment is just laughable -- but it's not offensive, is it? The Police have signed up for one tour and have committed to nothing else. So where's the offense?

If it's just the "walkers" comment -- meh, heard it a million times. And considering all of the legal/drinking-age members of VH are in their 50s, then whatever. Typical rock star bravado. Meh.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

I didn't hear the whole thing, but wasn't the Police reference specifically about the fact that Van Halen is apparently planning to stay together in this arrangement after the tour, while the Police won't? I don't think Roth meant any disrespect there, but like I said, I didn't hear the whole thing.

Anyway, I predict a train-wreck with this one. My money is on them giving Roth the boot immediately after the tour - and I have no interest in seeing this lineup anyway. Not sure I would even if MA was still there.

All valid points. And whether or not he directly or indirectly blasted The Police, the fact remains that VH is washed up. To even mention our boys in their own press conference shows their uncertainty about this tour. Do they really think they can do half of what The Police has done this year? If so, they're kidding themselves. Have another drink Eddie...

When I first read the article on Rolling Stone.com, I first was kind of pissed. But when I looked at the comments closer, I realized that all he was saying is that the VH tour is not meant to be a one-off deal, ride into the sunset. Roth thinks that this is a new beginning for VH. So, I'm not upset at all. However, even if VH records a new album, <let me shake my Magic 8 ball>, OUTLOOK NOT GOOD. (Ok; I know that is not an actual Magic 8 ball option, but I don't actually have a Magic 8 Ball)

Remember what a wise person once said about how bands talk about other bands...bands that are hitting hard spots or are struggling talk about bands they don't like, bands that are flourishing talk about bands they like...I took the reference to the Police to mean, as others have said, that they intend to keep on keeping rather than a limited tour...before even havig hit the road, that strikes me as a little premature, if not disconnected and naive...I think the way the Police approached this was very wise...go on the road, limited engagement with expectation of getting back to their lives, and if more emerges at a late, then so be it but promising big at the beginning is not really a wise opening move...especially when things have been tenuous, to say the least...

Stewart shit-talked a little at the beginning, remember pillaging and raping and burning down the world?...it's called promotion, and something that Team Copeland was always good at <grin>... but it wasn't in the context of other bands, well come to think of it maybe there was a comment about a flying pig or so on and so forth <giggle> It's just what it is, hocking your wares at the outset...

VH, welcome to having DLR speaking for the band once again...it's gonna take all of 5 minutes for the old feelings to come back if they did not work things out and smooth everything over among themselves to the point where they would be able to stand each other again...and ya, that would be unlike the Police who did pilates and ate macrobiotically and stayed at Stingworld etc. to make sure that things would be good between them before packing into a tour bus again (or lear jet, what have you)...I think it's a shame that they are going to reunite now rather than trying to work things out among all the original members, but on the other hand maybe Wolfgang will be a good thing (aside from how he rocks) to be there for Eddie...but he could have been on the whole tour with him w/o being in the band...there's something about the fact that they didn't resolve with all the original members, just moving on and leaving some parts unfinished and unresolved that gives me the indication that they are rushing it...It sounds like they *are* doing things differently from the Police, but that may not be a good thing.

But then again, VH is getting more scrutiny for not reuniting with original members when actually people are replaced in bands all the time...I mean the Pumpkins are back, for example, with two replaced members (for D'arcy and Jimmy)...lineups change all the time, fallouts and separation of ways happen, etc. Sometimes it may just be better to move on then dwell in the irreconcilable, but then again sometimes just replacing members doesn't really solve the problem either...

Tentative date puts them in Charlotte the day before my birthday, I do hope it does hold together and hope they do have a good time...I'd like to see them and wish Eddie & gang the best...

Of course, Stewart kept his word. The Police have pretty much pillaged and burned down the world with this tour. No raping, though, happy to say.

As a side note, I think this enterprise would have more credibility if anyone who's actually going on the tour had bothered to show up at the Rock & Roll HOF induction earlier this year. Talk about your missed opportunity.

Wasn't Roth home with hurt feelings over some snit regarding a song he wanted to sing?

Petulant pansy, indeed.

It's only fair to promote yourself by taking pokes at the most successful tour of 2007.
It's sort of like Roth is saying, "Damn I hope ours works that well"

But they have a young boy in place of Michael.

They're doomed.

Also note: only 25 dates are in the books, that is not a tour...that is a 'let's see if we can even make it through 25 shows before a committment to a tour"

Well, vespapod is a huge VH fan, so for his sake I hope they hold it together for a while (fortunately Philly is only like the third show of the tour?) so that he gets to enjoy a good show. I owe it to check it out too since he was so patient with me and all my Police shows this summer!
