Led Zep reunion in 2008

Postby TheEqualizer on 10 Aug 2007 16:59

I kind of liked Kenny Jones on the first tour. On the It's Hard tour, I think part of his problem was that the band was really collapsing. I can understand why many Who fans hate Kenny, but I gotta say, he was put in a really bad position.
But I am surprised when you say a PF reunion. They are around, tour make records and Roger Waters has amply demonstrated that he and the Great Pig in The Sky suck at the latest Grammys. He does not hold the name. That is the issue.
I saw Roger Waters perform back in June of this year (and 20 years ago after Expo 86 in Vancouver)...burnt the fucking house down at 63 years old and still very much kicking. Waters may not hold the name but give the man some credit, he's total pro and provides an exceptional level of musicianship to his band(s). I liked Syd Barrett too (RIP) but he hasn't been a part of Floyd for decades now and at six feet under ain't ever gonna be. 8)

Yeah, I meant he did not buy the right to perform under the name Pink Floyd.
As you imagine, I would never go to a Pink Floyd concert, or a Roger Waters concert. I know he is responsible for The Wall, which tormented me for a whole summer :x
But for some reason, I seem to like their covers. The first of the many times I saw Jerry Cantrell, probably up there with Andy, Beck and Page as my favorite guitarist, he played Brain Damage and I loved it.
I give the people some credit, but when I think of say, the Division Bell or Us and Them or Money, I throw up a little 8)

I am not a huge Led Zep fan, but haven't Page and Plant recorded and toured extensively a few years ago? Wasn't that the Led Zep reunion? I know John Paul Jones wasn't involved, but he wasn't a key member.

JPJ not a key member? You must be only a casual Led Zep fan. Like saying Entwistle is not a key member of the Who.

Without JPJ, there is no Zep, period. He was every bit as valuable as Plant. In fact, I think Zep could have been successful with a different lead singer from the beginning (and others were considered before Plant got the job), but not a different bass player/keyboardist.
a LZ reunion? It would be much bigger than the Police in terms of public attendance and resonance in the music world.

I hate to admit, but I'm pretty sure a Led Zeppelin reunion would be bigger than our guys' tour. Simply because they have a wider fan base.

....JPJ not a key member.....Zep tour bigger than TP.....WTF?? :?

Can I have some of what's being smoked on this thread?

Maybe, and only maybe, could the mondo success of this tour be eclipsed by an ORIGINAL reunion of ZEP. But not without ALL key members, and without Bonzo, we'll be waiting a fuck of a long time for that to happen.

Page and Plant already toured, and as far as I can remember, did not smash a whole lotta records.

I think Gina's right. (Referee: "2 minutes for instigating..")

To me Led Zeppelin without Bonham or any other is not Led Zepelin.

And I think is not just to me, but also for many people who liked Led Zepelin with original members.

That is the reason because a response from the audience is not the same as is being with The Police...

If this reunion happens, you will see what I try to mean.

(For me, a Floyd reuinion tour is the ONLY thing that could match my fervor for the current Police reuinion.)
I agree 100% sockii.

I actually have no take on this as I'm one of the few people in the world who are not into L.Z. Although, for some reason I really like the Robert Plant solo stuff. So, I guess, I hope it happens for the fans sake. As for the debate about what tour would be "bigger", I think that depends on where they play, size of venue, ticket prices, and length of the tour.

I normally live in lurk mode, but I was talking about this tour with a buddy of mine this weekend. Zeppelin is his favorite band and when he heard about the possibility of this tour, he called me almost instantly.

Personally, I believe they are by far the largest "reunion" tour possible (I use quotes because Bonham won't be there). IF JPJ played with Page and Plant it would easily eclipse The Police. Don't get me wrong, although I enjoy Zeppelin, the Police my favorite band by far.

Just ask yourself a couple questions: How many people, before this summer, have you seen wearing Police t-shirts? In college (for any of you under 35) how many Police posters did/do you see in dorm rooms? The answer to this is very few. Now, if you did the same for Zeppelin, it would easily be more than the Police.

It's not that I feel Zeppelin is that much better of a band, but they have three things going for them that The Police will never have: first, they are tied to the drug culture of the youth. Any kid who starts smoking pot pretty much starts listening to LZ and PF at the same time. I believe that if you were to perform a study of pot use and the initial introduction to LZ, they would have a very strong link. Second, it's "cool" to like LZ. Most people really only know a few LZ songs, but they know that being a fan of Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir makes you a lot cooler than being a fan of Every Little Think She Does is Magic. I'm not going to argue which songs are better, but they definitely wrote "cooler" and "heavier" songs than Sting. Third, LZ is tied to more bands than The Police. If you like blues, rock, or even metal, you can tie any of those genres to LZ. The Police had such a defined sound, they really only fit into the new wave/reggae genre comfortably. Some of the early stuff was definitely "punky," but they were still never as angry or loud as The Clash and Sex Pistols.

I could be completely wrong, but I really doubt it. If the three remaining members of Led Zeppelin got back together, and they did the tour proper (not just a couple shows like Cream), I truly believe it would be the highest grossing tour ever.
