Random thoughts about the Toronto gigs

It's all about the music.

Way better than my expectations. Very, very good. Tight, loose, buoyant and joyful. Two hours passed in five minutes. Two nights in a row. There is no rust.

It was amazing. Six weeks in and they are cooking. Forgot just how good musicians they are. Great music is visceral. You get lost, seduced by all the ear candy, as something constantly commands your attention. No sooner do you smile catching snippets of a new bass line, tip of the hat to Aston Familyman Barrett, than your ear grabs some extra tasty hi-hat and some 'did I just hear what I think I heard' guitar. And it was like that for two hours.

Sound was outstanding. Saw Sunday night from stage right, about thirteen rows up; Monday night from the floor, 10 rows back just off the right aisle. Close enough to catch all the eye contact. Same sets, different shows. Outstanding.

So hats off to something special. It has been 23 years since the last Police Picnic.

From Outlandos to Synchronicity, what I love about the records is the depth. Every time you listen you hear something new, endless subtleties that bring the music alive. But where The Police soar is onstage. Savour it. Hop on a plane, get in your car. Beg, borrow or steal to get another ticket. It's all about the music. Thank you one more time.

It was great to meet some of you at the Hard Rock Cafe. The flag is such a warm, humble and sweet gesture. Nancy was thrilled, prouder than an Olympic torch carrier to host and bear it. It was fun to see the band looking for it.
