Flag Idea -- Can I get your thoughts?

Postby DirtyMartini on 24 Jul 2007 22:28
Generally, a letter from the non-profit simply notifies them that a contribution in someone's memory has been made by "XX" person or people. I've never known a family member who didn't appreciate knowing knowing that someone cared enough to remember a loved one...but at the same time I understand (and share) your thoughts about respecting privacy. Since we know Stewart gets to see what takes place here, another alternative is to have any acknowledgment letter sent to Gio, and perhaps he could post the letter here.

Just some random, still-processing thoughts.
Oh, I'm totally with you, sweetie. I'm sure -- or I think, I can't speak for anyone else -- Barbara and Chandra or Stewart would be happy to hear about a donation in Ian's name, etc. I just don't want us to be tracking down Copelands and giving out their contact info, etc. Purely a privacy issue in my head.

I'm hoping that L4L would be willing to let one of us collect such notices and then submit them through Gio with the Flag or whatever.

First off. I want to congratulate DM on such an amazing idea. I also want to say that I'm a willing participante to any and all such behaviour. This is what sets us apart. Seeing all these responses makes me so surreal. I want you all to know that I am not bucking the trend here, as cancer is a great cause, but it is also very well funded.

For the sake of argument, I want to put my 2 cents in here. If any of you object, I will retract my statement in a heartbeat. I would love to see this money go to the Make A Wish Foundation. What they do is grant a child with a terminal illness one wish. Be it Disney, a celebrity or whatever. They make it happen. It usually only takes a few grand to make a wish come true. We might be lucky enough to grant 2 wishes here. It's obvious we all care, and I'll admit a bias. I'm a huge Make A Wish supporter, now more than ever. I got my wish, and I'm healthy. I will never be able to fully explain in words how much this tour has meant to me. And I believe that any little kid would feel the same way. What a great memory for a child.

If it helps, I would be willing to do all the legwork. I think the money should go in honour of Stewart. I'll do all the collections and everything. To save money, we could make up an email address that we all have the password to, or even a side site on this forum, if Gio would allow that. Something tells me that we are all very generous here. And if you've seen the Police for the first time ever this year, as I have. And if you've felt as excited as a 6 year old again, as I have. Then maybe we can make them feel like we do, if only for a few moments. Sorry if I'm over sentimental.

I understand what you mean, Alex. I personally hold the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (which gets just about zero funding) close because that's how I lost my mother last year. I'm also a big advocate for blood donation. We all have groups that we personally support.

But I suggested Live4Life because we know that it has been supported by Stewart's family and in many ways relates to Stewart's brother. Thus far folks seem pleased with that idea, but of course, if the gang prefers another charity, I leave it up to you guys. It's simply a matter of deciding in what we feel we can best honor Stewart and this lil' ol' flag project of ours.

You guys please just let me know what you think.

I'm in.

And while I think we could go on for days about worthy and underfunded causes, I like the idea of doing it for Stewart in his brother's honor.

We can select the next charity we fundraise for! ;)

I totally love this idea. I lost my dad to cancer when I was 6. Being I am a posterchild for sunscreen (1/2 irish and white as a ghost..I make casper look tan..hello) I definitely support this cause 1000 % count me in.

Just be aware and do your homework to make sure that we get any donations to the appropriate people. There are alot of folks in charities who can be shady...we don't want that at all.

Good luck and if I can be of any help, let me know.

This thread is yet another example of what (or who) makes this forum great.

Count me in.

And kudos to you all, especially DirtyMartini for initiating this.

Given how much of a funny-farm this forum can be at times, it's nice to know there are so many people with big hearts here.

Where are we on this? I ducked out to catch up on Harry Potter. Have we heard anything from Gio regarding The Big Man's thoughts?

I like the idea of GIO letting us know what Stewart would prefer.

I mean...It's all for him.

whatever works though.

At this point, folks seem to mostly lean toward L4L.

Believe me -- if Gio lets me know of any preferences of Stewart, I will let you guys know so that we can act accordingly. But thus far Gio has been pretty specific about this being OUR decision. So barring some new news, it's up to us to determine the best path.

I do feel as this will be in Stewart's name that he do the final nod to whichever charity gets the money.

And for a secondary fundraiser, unless the flag's all ready earmarked to go to Stew permanently at the end of the tour....you can always ebay the flag and donate that money to the charity as well
