And not to be picky but do we know if Ian's daughters still endorse the charity? I'd suggest if there is a way to check in with them to make sure that it is still an organization that they still support.
I love the idea about mileage and you place your own decimal point.

Off-board to Gio (before posting this thread), I already expressed my desire to not do anything that makes Stewart feel uncomfortable. Gio gave me the green light to open the idea up to you kind folks.

I'd be happy to scope out L4L, get a look at their annual review to check out their cost/benefit ratio, and if we still want to go ahead can speak to a development officer there about creating a designated fund. By doing that it would allow people to contribute whichever way works best for them, i.e. check, credit card, PayPal. I've done this before with a large group and what they generally do is set up an account code to which all funds can be directed. For example, we could all fall under a general heading of SC.net, with funds raised to be listed in memory of Ian. The fund could also maintain names of all individuals who contribute, and acknowledgment letters would be sent to each individual. Normally an update on funds received in someone's memory is sent to a family member, so if we wanted this to be done, we should maybe check with Gio to see if he could clear the best (confidential) way for this to reach Stewart and/or Ian's daughters.
FYI, notice to family members usually just says that "a contribution has been received by so and so," with no specific dollar amount attached.
We may also want to attach some kind of time frame, regarding which L4L might be best able to advise.

That was my thinking.
Although is there ANY way that we can keep the Copelands out of it? No way should Stewart's contact info get tied into this obviously -- and I'd hate to bother Ian's daughters somehow. Would they let one of us receive the fund info and then we could get the info to SC somehow?
The Copelands shouldn't have to be dealing with this stuff, and I'd really like to minimize our need to bother Gio too much for assistance.

I don't think we'd need to necessarily need to get any kind Copeland involvement other than 1) is the idea OK with Stewart or would he rather we not and 2) is L2L cool with him? Obviously Ian's daughters would find out but we wouldn't need to "bother" them.

It might be a good idea to come up with a group name that communicates our affiliation with the SC.net forum, but that in some way also communicates that it is in no way formally affiliated.

I am sure the Charity has an email address. The collector of the funds should tell them to open an Paypal free account, if they don't have one already. Then the collector can send the money via Paypal from his address to the Charity address.
This is a donation to a charity and does not anything to do with bothering the Copeland family at all. We can do it all ourselves in the name of the site, get an email receipt from Paypal when they collect the money and that will be all.
Simple as that.

I've never known a family member who didn't appreciate knowing knowing that someone cared enough to remember a loved one...but at the same time I understand (and share) your thoughts about respecting privacy. Since we know Stewart gets to see what takes place here, another alternative is to have any acknowledgment letter sent to Gio, and perhaps he could post the letter here.
