Actually, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of The Police. Do I like their stuff? Yah, definitely. Is it good? For sure... But I really prefer the early stuff they did when it was a far more dynamic arrangement and all three were writing and rewriting the songs. The more it became Sting's show the less I like their stuff... I'll take Fallout over Every Breath any day of the week. As for Sting's solo works, I am not a fan at all. Even his mid-80s solo stuff that sounds a lot like late Police does nothing for me. I can recognize it is good, for what it is, but it isn't my taste and I am not a fan. No question he is a great musician with a great career, but honestly I'd rather have coffee and chat with him than hear his solo work.
Admittedly, his songwriting prowess is significant, but I still find many of my favorite Police songs are the ones Sting did not write. Do I like some of the Sting songs? Yah, for sure, but to me, he's the guy who writes a few of the songs I like, plays bass well, and has a good voice, all of which are essential to fill in and support what Stewart and Andy are doing. And if they had to replace him one night of the concert with a substitute I really wouldn't be upset at all (though I know lots of other people would be). If Stewart wasn't there, though... I'd want a refund.
As for Sting as a person, he seems like a good guy with a good sense of humor who is probably a little bit too tightly wound. That's fine but whether it is him or the tour management they have overscripted much of this tour in my opinion. This is why, when I have something negative to say about the tour management, I direct it at "StingCorp.". I actually like him off stage a lot more than on. For me, the interviews he does are always far more charming and interesting than his stage performances.
However, I am a big fan of Stewart Copeland. I don't find any need to sing his praises here, but let's just say that if it wasn't for him, I would have little to no interest in seeing The Police live again.
Honestly, I will be happier when this whole Police reunion thing is over and I can hopefully see Stewart get back with Les and Trey for some Oysterhead gigs or start a new and intriguing project.

I'm probably one of the bigger Sting fans around here, but I also just love to make fun of him as his fame has turned him into such a caricature of himself.
Personality-wise I probably relate much more closely to Sting than Stewart, but I would never bother paying for a Sting.com membership and hang around chatting about him on the forum there. If it was free, and Sting actually read the forum or posted occasionally (which I doubt he would ever do), I might hang out there out of interest. I just love the fact that Stewart actually participates on his forum, and I get a kick out of imagining what must go through his head when he reads this stuff.
Both of them have left such an indelible imprint on me because I was exposed to the Police at the very early stages of my development as a musician...and they have kind of become my "reference" for popular music. Sting's songwriting ability is humbling, and his vocal approach is so uniquely original. And I can't even think about rhythm in music without listening to it through a "Stewart" filter. The way he approaches rhythm, is just so "Perfect", that most other approaches seem to pale in comparison. Andy as usual, never gets the full credit that he deserves, but he has also influenced my guitar playing immensely, and is the perfect "filling" between Sting and Stewart.
One thing I do have to say though...and it will probably ruffle a few feathers around here...is that I truly believe Sting is primarily responsible for the longevity of the Police's appeal, and the "staying power" of their catalog. I know that there are a lot of fans that are very partial to the early Police albums, and liked the later "Sting-centric" albums less. But I was thinking about this the other day, and tried to imagine where the Police would be if they had only put out 3 albums instead of 5. I love the early stuff, and there are definitely classic songs and a real "band" sound, but I think they would be perceived as a more of an '80s pop novelty act, had they stopped after Zenyatta. Even Stewart has commented that he is surprised about the Police's longevity when in his view they were just creating what was supposed to be disposable pop music.
It wasn't until GITM and Synchronicity that they entered the realm of untouchable "Artistes". The sophistication of the songwriting and musicianship displayed on those albums brought them to a whole new level in my view, and gave them a staying power that few other bands have ever achieved. By taking a chance and changing the band's sound (which could very easily have become dated due to all the copycat bands at the time), they created an appeal that transcended a particular time or generation. I haven't always liked every decision Sting has made, but I think (at least until his last few pop albums) he has made more right decisions than wrong ones. He's got major balls though...no one takes chances like Sting has in his career... and still remained so successful.
I'm not here to kiss anyone's butt though, and I'll still make fun of him even if it pisses a few people off.

I love Sting. He actually saved my life once. When I was a little Dukeling we were on vacation in Florida and I got pulled out by an undertow. Thought it was over and then who should appear and save me? None other than Sting himself. We thanked him and then he went back to the hotel room and did my Mom. Or maybe it was David Lee Roth. My memory is a bit fuzzy due to the lack of oxygen.

Sting has all the admiration, dicksucking, respect, and recognition he wants and certainly needs. Sting was blessed by mother nature with his looks, his wits, his talent. Sting has legions of adoring fans and at least 10 web sites.
And yes, without Sting (OR STEWART, OR ANDY) there would be no Police.
You Stingolovers are missing the point. We DO NOT hate Sting. We take the Rhythmatist's approach to life. Does Stewart bash Sting? Yes, anytime. Because. He. Can. Does he love him as a brother? Yes. Do brothers fight? Yes.
Stewart has bashers too. Especially on YouTube, there is a guy called StewartCopulate that I would like to strangle. So I hear you guys.
I personally love Stewart and Andy more than Sting, am more interested in their music than in Sting's, especially since Mercury Falling, but I have all Sting's solo records till then, and a couple of them are really excellent (I rest my case on Nothing like the Sun...). Sting has the knack for writing great pop music who touches everybody universally. Stewart and Andy are more difficult to get into, but those of us who are or have been musicians understand how good and underappreciated their music is and how HUGE is their contribution, if not from a songwriting point of view, in the creation of the unique Police sound that made the band what it was and still is.
I am one who listens to Everyone Stares' derangements in awe of what Stewart did to the songs. I would SO want to be able to have a soundtrack of that movie, it's amazing. Every time Stewart and Andy play I am amazed at their ease, their power, their style.

Yeah, it would be great to have the music to that dvd...it was gorgeous.
Sting is extremely talented, savvy, easy to look at, etc, etc...but let's face it, Stewart Copeland is the thinking person's musician/idol/eye candy (or whatever he is to you).

I am fed up of people criticising sting when he has contributed an awful lot to the police sound. Sting wrote the songs and brought them to the band in fully formed demos. Andy and stewart helped shape and fine tune the work that sting had done on his own. It troubles me that people on this forum are underappreciative of the work undertaken by sting in the police. The guy is a legend in my eyes.
