Whilst I share your cynicism, I was rather hoping that it wasn't going to be a (total) rehash - hence my curiosity!

Well, according to the front page of this site (scroll waaay down), that's supposedly *not* the case:

A&M will release some new interesting and great items that will see the light during the year: 'The Police Around The World' on dvd, one of the best video release ever The Police released back in 1981, and a second box set, the sequel of 'Message In A Box' (Vol. 2), ***full of tracks not included in the first box released in the mid-Nineties.***

Note that last part that I 'highlighted'....

stingus reported on this some time back. the extra tracks they listed (and then removed due to a request from label management) were pretty much stuff like those lame 'voices' remixes (add a doof beat and some unimaginative synths, you get the idea) and ye gods yet another version of DSSCTM '86. however i think that the backing tracks and maybe some other tracks widely distributed as "message in a box: the missing tracks" may be part of it. however, message in a box has actually already been redistributed in a different package with a different booklet - and no extra tracks.

But then there are of course the 4 tracks that were never put on Synchroncity too. N-one has ever heard them except the band and Hugh Padgam, but they exist.

oooh tasty, can you quote a source? if such tracks exist i would bet that they don't see the light of day on a MIAB type release. such box sets only use previously released material.

ok, not to hurt the feelings of the stingo fans on here (everyone is entitled to like more than one person), but can I ask a question?

Did I miss the part where Brimston and treacle stuff is Police material?
Isn't MIAB supposed to be Police material? I am sure there are existing and plans for more Sting box sets....

Does any one know of another band besides the Police that have more Greatest Hits/Compilation albums than they do studio albums? I can't think of any. It's become more than a tad excessive.

Oh, and mtobinjones, I believe Stingo acted in Brimstone but the Police recorded stuff for the soundtrack....IE, Stewart on drums, Andy on guitar, so it is Police material....just a bit odd Police material, and yes BongoBoy, the Brimstone stuff is on the Message in a Box set that came out in the early 90's...not sure about the Video Magic stuff though...what's that?

Stuff they did around 1978 with German composer/musician, Eberhard Schoener. If I remember correctly, Andy had some sort of prior-to-the-Police obligation to work with Eberhard, so they went to Germany and did some studio work with him. I believe (not totally sure without my reference materials) it was two sessions, one with all three ("Flashback"), and one with just Andy and Sting ("Video Magic").

It's *very* different that what you're used to hearing from our boys, at least it was back around 1980 when I bought an import LP of "Video Magic" and listened to it with my young teenage years. For a kid expecting something like "Outlandos", it's quite a shift of gears.

To be honest, listening to it these days, it doesn't seem *that* different from what all three ended up doing over their musical lifetimes (Andy doing his jazz/newagey thing, Sting and Stewart going their varied directions). But for what they were doing in 1978 & 1979, it's *really* unusual.

It's worth having. Check eBay, there's a couple versions of the "Video Magic" CDs that show up once in a while. I haven't seen "Flashback" on CD yet, but it may exist. It's a little confusing because although there are two seperate original albums, there have been a few different pressings over the years with the same/similar titles, and some tracks are duplicated, and one track gets renamed on one pressing. Very confusing.

You can also check your local used record store, the vinyl versions used to be sorta common, so you might get lucky.
