There is hope for young women in music

Postby Divemistress of the Dark on 08 Jul 2007 21:43

Yeah. I think anybody who doesn't like any kind of music (Oriental, country, klezmer, classical, rap) simply hasn't heard any of the good stuff.

I'll throw in:

* Neko Case
* Wanda Jackson
* Michelle Shocked
* Chrissie Hynde
* Debbie Harry

Lisa Jerrard. I saw her at the Universal Amphitheatre with Dead Can Dance and she made me cry faster than any singer ever. You might recognize her work from the "Gladiator" soundtrack. Also, Joss Stone is just a singin' fool, a natural. Love Patti Smith too.....

Johnette Napolitano from Conctrete Blond. She may not be all that young anymore but can sure belt 'em out.

Any of you weasils like Amy Winehouse ?

I like her semi-retro vibe...not all of it but she can sing!

Looks kinda good in a drunken way...

...like there's another way?

Ok you all take care then...

Yep, "Joey" blows. The rest of thier repertoire isn't too bad.

These lists could go on indefinitely. Which proves my point I believe :)

I was just going to mention her...I finally heard some of her stuff recently and I have to say it's quite hooked me (not all of it, but she's got one great voice and a very unique, retro thing going on. "Rehab" totally was my earworm a week or two ago).

I confess that in general I just seem to prefer mens' singing voices and styles over womens', but I do have some female artists I quite like. I still keep wishing and hoping for Poe to come out with a new album, for instance, and I just adore Annie Lennox (incredible voice & songwriter, plus she's still my #1 girl crush! :oops: )

S'okay, GSC. Kims Deal and Gordon were on a Hannah list, so they were already covered. (Yes, I checked.)

Well, not to make a huge deal about it, but I suspect it's still somewhat easier for men to get record deals. I can think of only about three all-woman bands (Sleater Kinney, Shonen Knife, Dixie Chicks) and I can think of about 50,000 all-male acts.
