Pretty tame, shortened for TV version of what they've been doing. Their concerts are much better. They were holding back and playing it safe. As noted, Sting's voice wasn't holding up for him, but nothing too bad. Andy was looking and sounding sharp, some nice guitar-slinging moves, playing to the crowd.

Kanye West...not much to say that hasn't been said...pitiful.

Can't blame them for the lousy crowd...it was a lame gig to start with. A week from now, no one will remember that this massive waste of resources even happened.

I've seen them several times thus far and Sting's voice wasn't just 'live' rough, believe me, it was giving out compared to his usual force and huskier (maybe cold or something)...he rocked like a pro, surely, but there were points where the strain was clear...I hope he gets to rest it a few days and just take it easy, he's really been singing his ass off this tour thus far...

Ooooo one more thought: think about the Mayer or West fans that may be rocking out to the Police now, perhaps because of MIAB, even if it wasn't everyone's bag!

One last tidbit: Gore just announced that according to their tracking numbers (attendance, online, text, etc) that Live Earth can now claim to be the largest entertainment event in history! But numbers are still rolling in <grin>

Too bad they didn't bring Puff Daddy or Duff Paddy to screw up EBYT once more - now THAT would have been nice ...

Mayer wasn't too bad. It was nice to have the extra backing vocal, especially with Sting at less than 100%. Kanye West would have been tolerable had he simply taken his verse and then danced his way to the back and said no more. Stewart sounded great, especially when you compare this with the Grammy performance.

Will post more tomorrow -- just checking in mostly to say I'm alive and home. Main comments:

Stewart was SLAMMING SOMETHING FIERCE tonight. Holy shit. He went hell or high water from the very beginning and just didn't stop. Straight-through it was looks of pain and torture. Holy shit.

As for MIAB, Kanye may not suit some tastes, but he was actually perfect in the space because of how mixed the crowd was. A large number in that audience were there for people like Kanye and Kelly Clarkson (kill me), so the energy in the crowd actually rose when Kanye came in.

I'm just annoyed that ONLY Kanye and John Mayer participated. Where the hell was the rest of the artists? This was the last song of a really really huge charity event, and ONLY TWO artists showed up for the ending? There should have been a dozen people on that stage -- where the fuck were they?

Bedtime. Will post the play-by-play tomorrow.

And btw, holy shit.

Thank you, Stewart.

I don't see how Sting does it. That's an incredibly demanding repertoire. But man....they are so great! The sonic space they create together doesn't need anybody else.....Saw a lot of great shows today. It was fun...

Bon Jovi was excellent! Not that it's a competition, but that's a good point about rocking the house that hard, that early......I still dug the Police a lot. Headline a show for 2 billion after a 23 year layoff? No problem.......

Hey folks, just re-watching various coverages, and DM is right - Stewart just killed out there tonight! Neither Bravo nor NBC even showed much Stewart, but Universal High Def was pretty much The Stewart Show...and there he was giving it the usual 1000%. I just don't know how he does this night after night.

Aw hell, I like Kanye. "Sting, you're the only Police good in the hood!" Just a little something different. I think Mayer's a lightweight, but he wasn't too offensive...Otherwise, what DM said here too...where was everyone else? Would've been great to see some others show up for the all-star jam.

They're still showing some great coverage from the Tokyo and Rio shows all over cable. I'll try to grab as much of it as I can. I'm sure it'll all be on YouTube tomorrow, though.

I thought these concerts were a great thing. One world, indeed. Maybe the U.S. will step up and carry our portion of the burden on reducing emissions, one of these days.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

OK, I'm still awake cuz I was browsing through this thread. Just a couple of quick things.

Bon Jovi was absolutely well-received. Total home field advantage. Plus, they're perfect for a large and diverse crowd They did a great job. Plus, this is New Jersey.

But -- and this is where being there helps -- you guys are way off on crowd response. I'm going to use AZ's comments, just because they relate best -- not hacking on AZ.
3. Roger Waters put everyone to sleep
Not even close. May have put some folks at home to sleep -- and "Brain Damage" and "Us and Them" was mellow, but the audience at Giants was all over "Money," "Brick II," etc. Huge response.
4. This all led up to the Police coming to a worn out and bored crowd.
Not in the least. Right before The Police came on, the stadium -- the WHOLE stadium -- had broken out into rounds and rounds of a raucouse Wave. We were on the 6th go-round (literally 6) when Diaz walked onstage to intro The Police. The audience was quite excited.

Like I said earlier, the crowd LOVED when Kanye came onstage. If he's not your musical taste, of course you won't dig it -- but for an audience of such a HUGE range of ages and tastes, it actually worked really well.

Again, not hacking on AZ -- not criticizing anyone at all. Just saw some crowd comments that I wanted to address. Video doesn't do justice to the full picture of the experience. It's a part of the whole "energy" issue of being there vs. not -- you don't really know how the audience responded and how the energy felt without being immersed in it. I can't tell you what selective images were broadcast; I can just tell you what the sea of people around me were doing. And they LOVED the two-star jam.

And Stewart, holy shit.

Have been watching the (Police)show twice, and imo MIAB sadly was ruined by the two sidekicks :(
John Mayer, (singing chorus) was out of tune, and Kayne... enough said about him
The only other thing that anoid me, was Stewarts snaredrum didn't cut trough at all, especially the rimshot was almost non-existent (well at least on the signal that i've got here in Europe)
But overall they'd perform REALLY well, and looking forward to see them live.
Good night (at 9:30 AM!)

:o At first I was quite stunned to see Mayer up there, but soon started feelin' it. Until Kanye bastardized the number. Phaty's right, we'd have been better off if it was P Diddy, and that's not saying much either. I just pray that the powers that be never let anything like that happen ever again.

Hell I don't want to be right on THAT one!

I watched the German show and thought - hmmm well lame audience, to later find out that a friend of mine who was there said the place was cooking ... !

PEOPLE STOP JUDGING STUFF YOU WATCH ON DIGITAL MEDIA - IT KILLS THE MOODS AND THE FEELINGS!

Whatever ... if one 13 year old kid today said to his father: "Dad who were those old farts opening up for Kanye? I like them!" a new Police fan was born!
