Anyone heard the latest version, from July 2?
Finally, it's getting more upbeat in the chorus, more true to the flavour of the classic arrangement.... Sting's more clipped delivery of the chorus vocal makes a huge difference.

I saw it July 3rd. It still somehow is quite working for me. I agree the clipped vocals are an improvement over the "86 style of chorus singing.

I think it's the lack of build up and intro. Aren't there keyboards on the original too? Maybe that's what's missing.

I wish I would have had some sort of recording device with. (God knows there were enough camera phones being held up all night). I'd love to be able to go back and analyze. My heart was too much in this concert and my head rarely made an appearance. All I know is when something didn't quite feel right. I hope to see them again at the end of the tour, somaybe then I will have a rational answer.

I saw it on the 2nd in St. Louis and it was pretty good. I still think it's too upbeat and confection-like, given that it's a song about abject misery, but whatareyougonnado.

Yes sir, they're sounding better as the tour goes on. While it's good to hear they're getting back in the groove, it does make seeing them so early in the tour more depressing (sort of).

Yes, Sting used his little side keyboard during performances back in the day. If they used the same intro these days, I'd fear it would sound really dated.

If you mean the original studio version, I believe Sting used his footpedal for the bassy line...but I could be wrong about that.

I just heard the St. Louis (7/2) version, and it *is* better. I like that Andy is mimicking that lone acidy tone thing a bit at the beginning. It's opening with a much better mood. The chorus is still weird, but improved.

Aha! i thought so.

I don't think a keyboard note, played like that on sustain for a long time would sound dated. It still sounds very good to me. Hell half the bands on the college radio station would kill to sound like that. They are all such a bunch of 80s New Wave lovers.

I miss the long sustained moody tone, with Stew's insistent pounding kick drum, like a heartbeat. That feel is not there yet.
