How much would you pay to see the boys play Synch 1?

Postby Mister Gradenko on 28 Jun 2007 20:54

Wasn't Synch 1 mostly a backing tape / programmed synth when they played it live in the Synch tour?

That sounds plausible too. Again, 24 years, lots has happened, and my brain ain't what it used to be. Or never was what I think it used to be.

Every drummer I work with hates playing locked to clicks, be they backing tapes or sequencers.

Oh, and as an audience member... I'd MUCH rather hear an abridged version of something than listen to guys playing over a damn tape. Ya know?

It'll be more than worth it. :)

Besides, you get Sync II. It's the superior Sync.

1. they are already using sample / autotuned backing vocals, so the double vocal thing is easy - they can just back it / fake it the way they are doing with 'roxanne' etc.

2. they are already using click tracks (they use IEM's to facilitate this - look up IEM at wikipedia if yr not sure what they are) and there is speculation they even drop back into a click at the end of 'roxanne'... (notice how after that joyous seattle performance, the tempo is always the bloody same now at the start, and always, always at the end after the jam, sting plods back in with a slowed down dah dah daH DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN on the bass before singing the chorus again? i suspect they are going back to a click for the backing vocal samples).

therefore, no logistical issues with synch I at all. only repetetive strain issues, if they stick with these same 20 songs for too long they will all get RSI. ;)

i have been meaning to check all the autotune vocal tracks to see how many of them are being played to a click, a simple loop BPM check at start, middle and end would do it. i fear the worst, that the tempos are often locked in by click tracks :(

Not sure about Sync 1 but I would pay shedloads for a version of Nothing Achieving ...

Bring on the Night is a much bigger omission IMO. The one I'd most like to hear them play is No Time This Time, but they'd just wimp out on it like Truth Hits Everybody, another one of my favorites in the original version.

Oh, you were serious. I'm sorry. Anyone who's seen the shows can hear the tempo variances from night to night, and unless they're mapping tempo changes into the click, that's not the case either.

By the way: I write for music/audio technology magazines, and have spent my whole life as an audio engineer and working in related fields. I'd tell you if I felt that the show was completely pre-programmed and auotuned and based on sample playback. It's not. :)

From the sound of Dodgers, they've (happily) sped up the final chorus in the end. It's still a bit of a slow-down from the bridge, but they've maneuvered things to work much much better.

Damn, people! It's getting where I just about can't keep up with this joint anymore. You fanatic fans and your flying fingers. Why, next thing I know, a bunch of you will be...following the band.....like the Grateful.......Dead........

;)

Um, I digress. I don't care how they do it. I just wanna see it. And so far "Truth Hits" is my absolute favorite track they're doing, followed by "Bed's" as a close second. Followed by "Footsteps" because of all the awesome Stewart performance, but I gotta tell you: Andy SMOKED during "World is Running" last night. I'll put up a few seconds of my YouTubesque crappy camera footage of it in a bit.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

I thought I was the only one who noticed that... I've been hoping they would ditch the sampled backing vocal at the end of Roxanne... keep the song grooving all the way to the end...
