Every time you read the next list you say to yourself "CRAP?!" how could I leave them out !!!

That's why it fun to list...say 20 acts, it makes you pick the first ones that come to mind.

You could never name them all, like movies...on and on.

I didn't list any of the heavier rock bands I grew up with. I should have done 5 from each catagory.

Heavyish Rock: Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zepp,Queen.

Bluesish: Leadbelly, Muddy Waters,Clapton

Folkish: Bob Dylan,Woody Guthrie, Brett Dennen,Joan Biaz

Reggaeish: Marley/Tosh, English Beat, UB40,Stephen Marley

New Wave: Big Country, Squeeze, Joe Jackson (old)

Adult mellow: Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing,Sammy Davis jr

Bluegrass: Osbourne Bros, Ricky Skaggs, Stanley Bros.

HipHopish: Public Enemy, Ice T (old), Grand Master Flash.

R&B Soul Funkish: James Brown,Sly and the Family Stone, The Funk Bros (the studio guys who played on all the old motown hits)

It's easier when you break it down.

Cheers.

Well, if I may be so bold, I think we discovered one certainty so far: none of us seem limited to a single genre of music in which we find enjoyment. That's very cool.

I think the fact that we all love the Police kind of pegs us as being able to appreciate a multitude of musical influences. :)

Talking Heads – See how the tail can wag the dog

The Beatles – A soap impression of his wife which he ate and donated to the National Trust

Graham Coxon – I just don't believe anything I say

The Divine Comedy – I met a girl, she was a frog princess and yes I do regret it now. But how was I to know that just one kiss could turn my frog into a cow?

Ben Folds – What if I was born 50 years before you in a house on street where you lived.

Only 20??????????/

~the Police (duh), but by far Stewart
~the Clash !!!!!
~the Buzzcocks (my other fave and my first real tour- and it was a reunion tour in 89)
~Stiff little fingers (green day owes them more than a few royalties!)

~Grunge All stars (I like that one and got a few faves smashed into one!) and I am going to expand on that theme
~Gangly guitar all stars REM/Let's Active/the Neats/Flaming Lips/Matthew Sweet
~DC Hardcore all stars? Fugazi/Minor threat/Dag Nasty/Faith/Scream/Wool/Shudder2Think/Jawbox
~Beat all stars the Beat/Specials/Jam/Madness for days when I remember my love for scooters and Quadrophenia
~Goth Rock all stars NIN/Skinny Puppy/Ministry for those cranky days.....
~Not bad for a white girl all stars Beasties/Public Enemy/Tribe Called Quest
~Manchester all stars Blur/Stone Roses
~the "listened to it because of my dad and now it has fond memories" all stars the Who, Aerosmith, Led Zep, Bad Co- hated it as a kid, still know all the words and downbeats from Dad playing the steering wheel...

new stuff?
~the Eels ( they have been around for a while, but I get sucked in more and more)
~Green day- like Stewart, got dragged into this after dismissing them- they and McPunk have grown up
~Fall Out Boy/Panic at the Disco (kids sucked me in and the lyrics are smart and tart as hell)
~Gorillaz beyond the hits, clever, clever, clever mashups

hmm, and there are Tom Waits days, Tony Bennett moments, and every once in a while a girl needs the Stranglers or Ian Dury

I almost forgot one of my favourite, now disbanded underdogs of all time...The Replacements.
Seen them in Seattle towards their end of days. Paul Westerberg's solo material is good but doesn't hold a candle to the Mats. 8)

Always a next to impossible exercise, but here goes:

(Other than Stewart/The Police)
U2
REM
Dire Staits
Talking Heads
Bruce Springsteen
Don Henley
John Lennon
Peter Gabriel
Green Day
Snow Patrol
John Mayer
Joe Jackson
Tori Amos
Melissa Etheridge

...at least for today!

It might be fun to have everyone add one CD in their collection that they like...but are also sort of embarassed by. I'll come clean with ABBA's Greatest Hits!

Heh. Caps are okay in posts, PRule. It's just a bit of unwritten, assumed decorum that one should avoid writing the whole title of a thread in all caps because that is one of Stewart's trademarks.

As embarrassing titles goes, I feel like I should say The Pet Shop Boys -- but they're fun as hell, so I'm not embarrassed. I've got the whole collection of The Monkees (on cassette) -- but nope, I still like some of them as well. Hmm . . .

I think I'm more embarrassed by the things that I don't own but should.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
