Just from a mum who loves her kids also understand choices, my goodness don't ever feel guilt about choices you make in life.

How times have changed. Years ago if you didn't marry and have kids there was something wrong. Now if you choose to stay home and just be a mum their is something wrong.

Everyone gives something to this world, what choices you make are yours and yours alone and if you decide not to have kids, you are a better person then someone who has kids and doesn't want them. And you are probably are great aunts and uncles and believe me kids can not get enough of that.

My kids have the best of both worlds. Great grandparents and aunts and uncles, cousins and they are just as important as parents.

Choices are what make the world goes around.
Oh god no! I use to say I might have one when I'm like thirty, but that dosent sound that far away.... so maybe 40. I've been a pain in the ass, so I'm sure my kid would be worse.
Yes, Mrs G, what goes around comes around. If I weren't regularly changing my hair color, I'm fairly certain there would be a few grey hairs on my head.

I couldn't agree with you more, Visions.

My decision to have a child came fairly late in life, and came as a surprise to me. I remember bristling through many years of people's stupid assumptions, and have always resented the "when you have a child" approach, as opposed to "if you have a child." We have all seen, I'm sure, way too many examples of bad parenting by people who had children without giving it the consideration they would put into buying a new car.

There are many ways to make a life and contribute to this world. Making conscious choices as opposed to blowing with the wind seems so logical you would think it shouldn't be so controversial.

Yeah, I hear you on that. There's an unfortunate assumption/attitude sometimes that a person isn't really an "adult" or "mature" until one has a child...never mind the fact that there are lots of people out there who match neither of those descriptions who have children. It's not the magic key to maturity.

Just this morning I even had to baffle over an argument on tpt.com over Sting's music, and someone who was dismissing those who don't like his solo work saying (paraphrasing here but you get the gist), "Well, when you've had CHILDREN you'll be mature enough to appreciate his music. Until then I don't want to hear you criticize it, you just don't understand."

Oooo-kay.

Well anyway, like I said earlier, I would love to have children some day (before it's too late), but that was a decision I came to late in life, once I knew for sure it was something I wanted. I have nothing but respect for those who either consciously chose to remain childfree and for those who take on the challenge of raising children. Both paths in life involve their own sacrificies as well as their own rewards.

Well said sockii - can't help feeling sometimes that several people on this forum would have made excellent journalists and politicians!

The comment I always get is "oh you'll feel differently when you meet the right man" (which I confess I think there may be a grain of truth in) but it does rather imply that deciding to have kids is a *romantic* choice, which it really shouldn't be in my humble opinion - as that is a far from rational approach to something as momentously life-altering as parenting!

When I lived in a small town I used to get a lot more shit about it and in my usual pig-headed way I got a bit anti-children in response, but since moving to London I find people barely bat an eyelid at a single, childfree 34 year old woman and it's allowed me to mellow and warm up considerably. Secretly I've always really liked babies but people confuse that with broodiness so I never admitted it.

Let's face it - I'm really doing the world a favour - who needs miniature Hannahs running riot across the planet! So yeah - single, child-free and knobbly-kneed and proud of it
