A misheard Police lyric story

My little sister is now not so little... she's 36 years old.

But back in 1982, she was 10, and one day I came home from school to find her listening to my copy of "Zenyatta Mondatta". She had headphones on, and was singing along quite loudly to what she thought were the lyrics to the song's chorus. And what she was sporadically screaming was:

"Put Mary in a coma!"

It took me a few seconds to realize she was thinking these were the lyrics to "Canary in a Coalmine", and at that point, I was doubled up in laughter. These are the reasons that younger siblings exist: for our general amusement and entertainment.

I don't have any Police lyric misquotes to site, but a good friend of mine used to think that the end of the pledge of alliegence went 'with liberty, and just a straw'. That one still gets my goose.

Not that this is entirely on topic, but an old friend of mine will occasionally (and quite randomly) say, "With words they try to jail yer".

I guess it's because it rhymes better with "failure". I've never bothered asking WHY he does this, exactly. One can only assume.

I took my 3 daughters to the Dodger show- I believe in cultural experiences!

Anyway, after the Foos, they were playing some footage of the boys, and one of my daughters, very loudly said "Oh, so those are the Beatles"

hilarious uproaring from all around! Mommy screeching NO!

However, I felt better as she had told someone a couple of days before that I was a teenager during with the Beatles. NOW, the Police are my Beatles-I grew up with them!

I was so NOT a teenager during the Beatles- but if she thinks the Police are the Beatles I was!( I was so insulted when she said I was old enough to be around for the Beatles- but then, she knew not what she said!)

I was a teen when they broke up- and lucky to be one of the few on the board my age to have been allowed to see them!

I'm pushing 40-but not there for another year!

Oh my god, that's hilarious. I have one. When I was about 18 I put my cassette in the car radio and So Lonely came on and my mom said, "Why the hell is he singing salami over and over?"

Non police but, my half sister one day told my mom, "I didn't know Jimi Hendrix was gay." My mom replied, "where did you hear that, no he wasn't". My sister replied, "yeah, in his song he sings, "excuse me while I kiss this guy." Still makes me laugh in hysterics when I remember that.

i can remember struggling trying to sing along to 'Tea in the Sahara' as a nipper... i was trying 'give us a heart' or something, til the penny dropped that the line was probably the song title... what a numpty..

i also recall balancing my huge mid-80's tape player next to the telly to get the synchronicity gig when it was shown in the UK on a new years eve (85ish?).... i got all ready, and made a cover for my tape, i wrote all the songs on the cover in order (synchro 1, walking in your footsteps, Oh my God etc)..... i was so shocked when they started playing the wrong songs; this wasn't the album... my little young mind was so confused.....

i did that same thing with EVERYTHING! music videos, movie lines, concerts... you name it! i'd sit there with my box next to the single tiny speaker on the TV and record everything. wow... that's a blast from the past! then i would lace up my skates and take my box down to the empty parking lot and blast that horrible sounding tape until it was dark

Salami, yes! I remember getting the Synchro concert on VHS when it first came out, and I had it blasting in our den. My mom would wander in and out of the room, familiar with some of the tunes only because I would be blasting them from my room - which she called the Police Shrine. But during So lonely she said the same thing - why are they singing "salami"? I love it. She asked me to call her from Dodger Stadium as they came on, but I couldn't hear a thing - it was incredibly loud.
