WTF?...

WTF?...

Postby Neuron Divide on 18 Jun 2007 02:01

Sorry if it's a repost...

But, I'm just wondering if anyone else is starting to become rather annoyed with Sting doing the "rushing the words at the start" thing - i.e. Blurting out a line of a certain lyrical phase really fast and way ahead of time, without letting it flow how it should... What's up with that? Is it an ego thing? He does it all the time - maybe it's just me......

Well, I have to say that this is quite possibly the very first (and only) forum I have ever encountered on the interwebs that doesn't have phpbb code enabelled.

What's a "phpbb" code?

And, I'm not really sure what you're referring to. I'll have to take a listen on You Tube.

I've noticed that myself on several clips on You Tube (ie. Message, Syn 2, etc.). He seems to be doing that more lately and I'm not sure why. It does break up the melody and I'm not a big fan of that. This is not to be confused with the many words per second that some songs obviously call for. Is it a bass playing while singing issue?

That aside, I'm very happy with most of the clips that I've seen and can't wait till they hit Toronto in July (and November).

That's not an entirely uncommon thing for singers to do, although too much can be irritating. Kind of half-spoken phrasing. You could even call it rap.

It's more of a problem when he does it on the chorus of a song, like "World Running Down".

have a look at who wrote 86% of songs by 'The Police'.
i think it was Sting, right?
ok.
have a listen to Sting's last three albums.

there is about as much chance that they'll write a musically subversive album which throws a proverbial spanner into the works of the mainstream industry, as there would be of stewart being given carte blanche to perform a supporting set of klark kent material.... but boy, wouldn't it be grand.....
[rant]

I can see the Police writing a new album, and all of you arse suckers will be bitching about it not sounding like "the police of old"...

These guys could go in any direction, and they have the skills and ability to go there... I sincerely hope that they throw caution to the wind and use their talents to throw a spanner in the works of the mainstream music industry...

Sting's been doing this since he's been solo. Yes, it's annoying, but it's also a way of changing up the song. He's not locked to harmonies on verses like some recorded Police songs have.

As far as rushing the phrases? Hell, listen to his bass playing. Then, go listen to the breaks on "Heavy Cloud, No Rain." Vinnie, Dominic, Keith Carlock AND Stewart all say he rushes.
"Did you say-jazz? I could've sworn I heard..he said jazz!"
