I'm sorry but if you can't tell the difference between what Sting did solo, and what the Police do...I can't help you.

One is ROCK & ROLL...and the other is pure VEGAS!

Most of the excitement of Rock is that you never know what is going to happen next, and you're always on the edge in a kind of reckless but controlled way.

While Sting's band may be amazing players, everything is so finely tuned and almost "automated" that it is borderline boring. All the "rawness" is gone.

The balance of Sting's musical sophistication and perfection with the raw energy and edge of Andy and Stewart is what made (still makes) The Police great!

Sting is currently tipping the scales in his favour because he is holding all the cards, but they still KICK ASS over his solo stuff!

WOW! The youtube clips from Bonnaroo are smoking! Me thinks there are some peeps who would complain about rain during a draught.

I think they sound AWESOME and if they have to 'reinvent' their songs to keep playing them, reinvent everything for as long as you like! I just can;t believe my favorite band is back together!!!

Having just watched the Synchronicity II YouTube clips from the previous Sting tour (one of them with no less than Vinnie Colaiuta on drums), I can honestly say that the clip from Bonnaroo last night really does sound better to my ears. On one of the other clips, it's Sting with Dominic Miller and a bunch of other musicians and backing vocalists, on another it's Sting with Dominic and the other guitarist and a drummer, and all of those versions sound very nice and energetic and quite full. On the Bonnaroo clip, it's just three guys on stage and it sounds almost as full, but the feeling I got is that of a speeding locomotive train barreling down the tracks almost out of control with an intensity that was simply not there on any of the Sting solo clips.

I like Sting's solo clip and Bonnaroo's clip both because "Syn Ⅱ" is a
great song and I love Sting's voice.

I enjoy Bonnaroo's version better just because the three men are
playing TOGHETHER AGAIN.

That is a very very big present for me since I have never seen The Police
before back in the 70's and 80's...

That doesn't sound like an autotune issue. He did exactly the same thing on the 28th in Vancouver. I was really freaking out when it started happening, and he just kept doing it until he fixed it coming into the verse.

I've never heard Sting go so far off the mark several times in a row... I think it must be a monitoring (maybe even hearing) issue.

All of the drummers in the solo Sting clips are great players, but
I'm sorry it's just not the same- It's all too polished.
Stewart drives that song like no one else can. It's not just about playing the notes, it's the feel, the emotion.

It's got to be autotune. Can't imagine it being anything else. It's happened in the same spot at several shows. I think the Yooo's on Synch II are samples, and he's singing along with autotune. Somebody's napping at the board.

Another clip--Sting sticks his tongue out at the guy with the camera. You can hear security get him at the end of the Synch II clip. Only made it through two songs:

They sound good on these two songs, though. They do seem to be getting tighter and faster as they progress.

He's definitely singing along with samples for Synch II. He's been using them for quite a while to "fill out" that part. There actually is a lot more "backing" stuff going on than most people realize...and I think that may partly be responsible for some of the complaints regarding tempo/energy level etc.

Listen to what Stewart says about Synch II in the TPT.com rehearsal video...

"The tempo is obviously critical for the previously stated reasons" (or something to that effect). Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sounds like he doesn't want to come out and say the tempo is critical because of the click track, and that it is difficult to avoid speeding up and losing (no pun intended) synch. I think they may be playing to a click in many songs rather than flying in the backing samples live.

I can't hear any autotune though. He is not always dead on with his pitch, and there is no correction made that I can hear.

Also, those bad notes he hits have no relevance to any known scale or key! Autotune would have at least attempted to correct to the key of the song (or at least an in tune chromatic). There also isn't any of the glitching that normally occurs for big pitch corrections either.

I'm thinking it's correcting for the PREVIOUS song...and that's why it sounds so bad. In other words, in his ear he's singing along correctly to WotM, but the speakers are outputting it in the key of Synchronicity II.

You're right about Stewart on the rehearsal video. I don't doubt they're using a click, at least for some songs. This was my initial argument against samples when Stewart was asking about sampled BG vox before the tour, but if they felt it was absolutely necessary, I guess there is no way around it. However, it could also be about delay. If Stewart and/or Andy is using a timed delay, they have to stay pretty close on tempo not to lose the sync.

1. Excellent performance of 'message'. Those drums.... wow. Never fails to amaze me that Summers constantly fucks up that riff, though. Weird. I can play the bloody thing! Dominic Miller can! Ha! Very curious.

2. I hate the stupid freaking half time shit in Synch II. That's a Sting Solo thing. Kills it. You reading this, Stew? It KILLS THE MOMENTUM! Bassline is becoming noodly, too, Stingo. Find a pick. Too busy in 'Synch II'.*

3. Once and for all - LOSE THE BACKING SAMPLES.

4. Did I mention that Stew's drumming kicks ass? Jesus, he sounds great. What has he been doing that Andy and Sting haven't, I wonder?
