Who is in the audience?

Postby smudge on 12 Jun 2007 07:48

Hmm. Not sure I buy the female groupie/male muso divide - although at age 14 I may have had a few posters on the wall ......

Oooh Divemistress have you heard Bernie Hayes? Probably my favouriet australian singer/songwriter.

And apart from all the obvious stuff (U2, REM etc), the only interesting thing about my musical collection is a serious obsession with australian indie, which is an expensive habit if you live in England.

No!! But I'll try to get hold of some. Does he have a website?

I am a huge, huge, huge Paul Kelly fan. I've been on his email list for 15+ years...seen him live seven or eight times, including once in Australia...and am dying waiting for his new album to come out next month. Hub is similarly into the Hoodoo Gurus and I'm getting pretty into them myself, especially since seeing them in Chicago about two months ago.

Their albums are really poppy, so I expected sweet melodies and guitar pop...ha! They were easily one of the best loud, filthy-in-a-good-sense rock and roll bands I've seen in the last ten years. I will be going to great lengths to see them again, and have been fairly seriously toying with going to Big Day Out next year if they're on the bill.

You know about redeye.com.au, right? They've got great selection, their server's fast and their time in transit is pretty good, at least to the U.S.

I suppose I'm similarly obsessed. I've been lucky enough to travel Down Under a couple of times and have carried an extra suitcase for bringing home CDs. ;)

He's on myspace. Actually while you're there take a look at his 'friends' - particularly Smudge (the excellent sydney band, not me!). I'm sure Red Eye will have all three albums. My favourite is still the first one 'Every Tuesday, Sometimes Sunday'. Also try www.halfacow.com.au, which is his label. Half A Cow stuff takes up a disproportionate amount of space on my shelves :-)
but there was a lot of bad music made in the 70s--disco, soft rock, etc. T
sorry to pick just one line from your post, but I just hate it when disco is dismissed as catecorigally bad music. There were tons and tons of brilliant, funky pop songs which deserve recognition.

But back to the topic, I'm 40 and I like disco
Plus loads of other stuff: funk, raj, african music, classical... some of my favourite artists are Prince and Neil Young. And occasionally Turbonegro

I really want to thank the 'drummer grrl' spirit of this board: most probably partly encouraged by that, I just signed up to an African dundun drumming class! Long-time dream come true that one :D

I would love to see the Hoodoo Gurus :) I've never been in Aus for BDO - mostly ended up at smaller gigs around sydney - but I'm seriously contemplating it for next year. Its been nearly 7 years since I was last over there, and DAMN but I miss it.

I like disco too, rapa. And funk, especially. If you didn't see my link in the Bonnaroo thread, my friends here in Nashville put out a really excellent album this week that's got a heavy James Brown influence. Check 'em out if you like that stuff:

(My favorite track's probably "Can You Feel It"...)

I've got some of that Half a Cow stuff too, smudge...thanks for the tip! I will definitely check out your recommends. I think we had an Oz Music thread going on here for a while, might need to resurrect it. Especially since we have a few actual Australians on here. ;)

What a diverse little audience we are!

Postby Yorkie Girl on 13 Jun 2007 23:58

Thanks for all of the replies. At 45, I guess my husband and I will be the oldest fans in St Louis. I'm surprised that anyone would think of The Police as a female groupie pop band. I heard them on a college radio station, then a little bit later, KSHE in St Louis. I was hooked before they became really popular. As I recall, alot of guys liked them too.

The Police was one of the first things that my husband and I found we had in common. Ska was popular then, too. I loved it when the Police threw a little of it in the mix.

We do disagree on who is the best drummer. I say it's Stewart and my husband says its some guy named Ginger Baker??

I was in the audience in Seattle, and at 38, I felt like I was perhaps in the younger half of the audience (though not by much). Really, it spanned the realm from tattooed and pierced teenage emo refugees to 50-something lawyers in casual Armani accompanied by their trophy wives in pearls. A really, really diverse audience, more so than almost any other show I've seen.

That having been said, I think that most of the crowd was 35-45, and everyone was having terrific fun. And, by the way, this was my first post here. Hi everyone. :)

It'll be interesting to see how the audience shapes up at Bonnaroo.

Welcome aboard, Yorkie and jeff! (Hey, we really did get some inflow of new folks from that kerfuffle on the forum the other day...)

the first LP I bought as a kid, was Z/M, and still own it and play it (was 10 at the time)

ever since that day, I had been a huge fan, but was too young to see a concert
