Pretty good. The stuff I've heard from Seattle is starting to sound like something recognizable.

Getting pretty close...and I'm not talking about the arrangement, I'm talking about the level of playing. Nevertheless:
- Still a little slow.
- Sting's gotta get a pick. Not to put too fine of a point on it, but if you play bass that way, it's gonna sound like crap. No way around it.
- Stewart doesn't quite have the hi-hat nimbleness and machine gun snare he used to. Wonder if that's a conscious decision to be less "busy", or if it's rust. Probably getting tired by the end of the show, too.
I know people love it when I do this, but I gotta be honest.

Thanks for the link! And my alltime favorite song as well, really thanks. A note to Sting.... and I mean no disrespect. I have always thought you were brilliant on your own. Seen more than one show, in the second row, but you will never find a guitarist who will ever challenge Andy's imagination. That's not to say Andy is the best in the world, he's just the best for you. Andy is in the top 5 worldwide though. I had to add that. What a georgous solo in this song. That's the difference between Dominic and Andy. In the studio, I'd say that you could present a case for Dominic, he is very proficiant. But his live version imitates his studio work. To me, it makes no difference if I'm listening to a concert, or the cd.

In fact my memory of Sting drummers is limited to Omar Hakim, and that guy with the glasses... Vinnie Colutia (sp) I always keep taking him for Max Weinberg. This song proves that you can't find a drummer 25 years younger that can handle what Stewart does. Forget your ages for a moment, even today, bands are afraid to play your music, because no one can do what Stewart does. Anyhoo, I might just be overly nostalgic over the song posted here, it certainly made my week.

I guess maybe what I mean isn't clear if you don't have some knowledge of bass technique. Here's a picture of proper right hand technique for bass guitar:

I'm guessing Sting probably started out on guitar, switched to bass and never learned the proper technique--which is why he always used a pick in the past. The way he plays now looks as if he hasn't changed his hand position much, just got rid of the pick. He's kind of "pinching" the strings with his thumb and forefinger, almost like you would finger pick an acoustic guitar. That is going to create a muted and muddy sound, and it's going to reduce your attack and accuracy.
In other words, playing with your fingers the way it's shown in the first link is the "preferred" way to play bass. That's the way most bass players do it. Using a pick is more common with speed metal type players, and was pretty common in punk rock. It creates more of a "growling" sound with more string noise, and probably lets you play faster than you could with your fingers unless you have insane skills. There is also a thumb slapping method commonly used in funk, but that's not what Sting is doing. I've never seen anybody play the way he does, and I think it's hindering his playing and his sound.

Well, he's never been hailed as the world's greatest bass player to begin with. He did come up with solid parts and had reasonably good feel back in the day, especially considering he was singing. The way he's doing it now isn't working, IMO. If you have an opportunity to pick up a bass and try it, you'll be able to hear the difference.

Glad they'd choose to do a [i]warm-up[/i] tour in the States, before hitting Europe (just kidding!)
Even in his younger days, Stewart was a litlle rusty at the beginning of a tour, so (hopefully) he hasen't peaked yet..
I don't think Stewart running out of steam, due to a 1½-2 hour show, just listen to some live stuff from Oysterhead or the Gizmo tour!

Unless you are going a little deaf, you will note that the way Sting is playing this song without a pick creates a needlessly plodding bass sound, in which he hits an octave note on the "and" between notes every couple of bars or so. The song does sound a lot better with tight 8th's hit with a pick on a single note. I hate to say it this way, as a fact rather than an opinion.... but i'm feeling snippy and it's true. It sounds better when Sting uses a pick. Fact.

for a lot of songs, you'll notice that Sting's finger work suits being, well, finger-work and not pick. but for songs in which there's a throbbing bassline which at a relatively fast pace, like 'Synch II', you'll hear a strong difference. give us all the shit you want - hang it baby! some friendly piss-taking is always welcome - but seriously, listen to the version as i've suggested. you'll see (hear) what i mean. you don't have to know your 'music theory' to hear the difference.
You'd notice if Stewart started playing with cotton wool wrapped around the ends of his drumsticks, wouldn't you? Same principle....
