No Clue Help me

Back in 82 I went to see Rush. After the concert I was very upset about the performance that Rush had delivered. Not because I thought they played badly but because they played the album they where promoting at the time note for note & I felt that if I wanted to hear Rush play note for note all I had to do was put on the record at home. Which brings me to my point; I applaud THE POLICE for changing up the material now and back in the 80's. This is nothing new for THE POLICE. Take for example THE BEDS TO BIG; the live versions are nothing like the studio version nothing. In the 80's THE POLICE did not play their songs like the album version then either, so all this talk about I DON'T LIKE THIS OR I DON'T LIKE THAT makes no sense to me (unless they have never seen or heard the police live) THE POLICE have always altered songs live. Why are people so surprised ?? I want nothing to do with a band who can’t grow experiment and take the music to other dimensions remember Artist often times have to compromise certain songs just to get airplay then when they play those same songs live that’s another story as we all know. THE POLICE all come from some form of (Jazz training) background which can be about improv, Reggae can also call for improv or DUB if you will. So for me I can’t or won’t be to picky about how THE POLICE run it because I have waited 24 years to see them and I will take it how they give it to me just like I did back in 1979 when I had a choice as to whether I thought this new band called THE POLICE was good or not

SkaMan: how's it going?! Yesssssss! Be open to what comes is exactly my philosophy...a little comparison here and there is inevitable (it's hard to ignore what you've heard a thousand times before), but I think music is about opening yourself to what unfolds before you, with all the uncertainty and excitement of the live experience <grin> It sounds like you'll have one heck of a time when you see them: enjoy!!

It kinda confused me too. Why not just go to the show and enjoy it?. In these modern times I think maybe we over-analyize everything.

Hey Ska Man; I have seen Rush play live so many times now and there is little or no improvisation on ANY level. For those who like to hear "Tom Sawyer" or the entire "2112" album played note for note just like the original when it came out then that is exactly what you will experience.
I enjoyed the reworked versions of some of The Police songs and like yourself, after 24+ years I want to hear some different twists to a repertoire that is decades old now.
Somebody had mentioned in one of these threads that if you want to see a show performed the same way, every time just like the recorded version that there is always Celine Dion and we could add Rush to that one too. Maybe the two would like to double bill in Vegas?
Celine and Geddy Lee would make quite a pair singing "Limelight" or "Spirit Of Radio" together

I definitely listen with an open mind, and I like most of the changes they've made to the arrangements (even if I think they could be delivered with a little more energy).

Nevertheless, I think the changes they made to "Truth Hits Everybody" and "Next to You" really watered down those songs, and I think the changes they made to "Don't Stand So Close to Me" are not good at all. I also think Murder by Numbers is a weak selection compared to a lot of other stuff they aren't playing, particularly "Bring on the Night".

They're playing 20+ songs--most of which they changed in one way or another--and there are basically three that I think they fundamentally screwed up, and one they shouldn't have chosen to play. That's a not a bad average.

I'm so excited to hear the "new" music the Police will play. I loved their altered live versions on the Synchronicity tour. Back in the day, I made a really low tech tape off the TV because i didn't have a proper live recording. I just can't believe that I'm finally going to get to see my favorite band of all time live in less than a month. I have been waiting since 1982 when I first started listening to them in the middle of nowhere.

I have seen sting a few times and when he plays Police songs, even deeply rearranged police songs it has been a total thrill. I can't believe I'm going to get to see an entire 30 song set live. Sorry to be an adoring sycophant, but I can't help myself.

Why should I pay nearly $300 to hear what I can at home on a cd player?

I want to hear something different, something new, and maybe it won't all be exactly to my taste but it will be my favorite musicians exploring and keeping themselves engaged by letting the music evolve and change.

I've seen Rush once. It was a good show but I don't need to see them again.

I'll go see the Police as many times as I'm physically and financially able.

I saw them on the Zenyatta, Ghost and Synchronicity tours. The music was tight, loose, exciting, improvised, unexpected, as all the LIVE music should be. No show was the same.

Plus, I don't think there's anything wrong with being excited fans on Stewart's official site. He pays for and hosts this thing. If folks want to be really negative, there are p*l*e*n*t*y of other places to go. I don't mean that as a jab at anyone in particular, by the way.

You know, I think a lot of these defensive pep rally responses are from people who haven't actually heard the show yet. Most of what I've said here has been the general consensus of people who have already seen them. They are still a good band, and the songs are still good, but there are some weak spots.

If they hadn't mucked about with songs live we would never have had (the song) Regatta De Blanc... imagine that! Other than that I am staying out of this argument until I've had my turn on the live ride!
