YO, Cleveland! Detroit! Recommendations?

YO, Cleveland! Detroit! Recommendations?

Postby DirtyMartini on 02 Jun 2007 20:20

My psycho brain (and others, it would appear) is contemplating a pilgrimage to the Cleveland and maybe the Detroit shows in July.

Would anyone familiar with the areas have any recommendations for hotels? travel resources? scary areas to avoid?

I'd probably go by way of Greyhound or road trip.

Thanks!

Both sockii and I got great deals on Priceline.com for rooms at the Hyatt in downtown Cleveland when we went to see Stewart at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two years ago. I think it was like 45 before taxes. It wasn't too far from the subway which goes straight to the airport. Here's sockii's description of the room from her blog of that trip:

..it was 3am Tuesday morning when I finally staggered bleary-eyed into the lobby of the Hyatt. Part of a late-1800's shopping arcade, the building was very cool and the room an absolute steal! I'm not sure I ever looked forward to collapsing into a bed for a few hours as much as I did that night.

It looks like that hotel is within walking distance of the arena (about a third of a mile according to maquest).

I was just checking out stubhub and it looks like you need to purchase at least two tickets for the Police show. I would be interested in the 212 or 213 sections for $37 each since they'd be good views of Stewart if anyone wants to go in on a pair.

Tee hee a Stewart-contingent at his b-day show would be super-ownage...are there seats behind the stage for that one? <grin>

Last time I was there was for the Who (ca. 2000 ish) when the Ox was still thumping, but we drove in, had dinner and drinks near the venue, then gunned it home afterwards (when we were all still at Penn State)...so I don't have anything to say, but will gladly lurk in your thread when answers start pouring in since I am contemplating how this would be possible (like a Louisville to Cleveland trip and perhaps head over to State College to check in with my advisor etc. to make the trip somewhat 'official' before heading back)

Greyhound has a frequent miles program where if you make a certain number of trips you start getting things like discounts, free companion fares, etc. <grin>

Thanks for the info, Conroy.

I'm thinking I'd aim for the bus or car to save on transportation costs, then pick up some slightly more expensive seats in the arena. (Plus, I'd have to get to LGA (EWR fails me this time 'round), which is an adventure in itself.) $37 is a hell of steal though!

Considering Detroit is less than 3 hours from Cleveland, it sure is tempting to hit that one up as well . . .

GSC, Louisville to Cleveland doesn't sound too hard. In theory, at least.

nancyrose is also contemplating, but are there any other folks considering (or already planning to do) Cleveland and/or Detroit?

Okay first of all let me ease your fears...I am originally from Detroit...They are playing "The Palace of Auburn Hills"...which is not in Detroit ...it is a very nice and safe area. No worries....the area around Auburn Hills is Pontiac it is a bit seedy but nothing like Detroit...book a hotel in Waterford which is about a half an hour from the arena ...or find a place in Auburn Hills...The Palace is known for its incredible sound system...choose Detroit...you will love the arena and sound system hope this helps you!!!!

Thanks for the info, DBMI. No fear-easing needed -- just easier to know which are the seedier areas BEFORE arriving than after.

Is Auburn Hills accessible from the Greyhound station without a car? I'm considering a bus from Cleveland to Detroit -- which will mean finding my way from the bus station to a hotel/the arena. But if you can't get there from here, then a car (or reconsideration) might be necessary.

ETA: Hmm . . . yeah, it looks like you can't there from here w/o a car.

Ooh! But would this work? A bus from Cleveland to the Pontiac Greyhound station (51000 Woodward Ave, Pontiac)? Could one get from the Pontiac bus station to a hotel to the arena without a car?

Thanks again!

Oooo, Detroit sounds tempting after the plug!...it looks like Cola to Cleveland, Cleveland to Penn State for Official Bidness and State College to home is a probable scenario (probably not Louisville)...

Look on hubby's face today: priceless! But, he was promised treats of his choosing in return sooo <grin>

DM you may need to touch up that flag!!!! <grin>

Yeah, the hotel Conroy and I got in Cleveland was SWEET for the price. I love priceline for this kind of thing - a great resource is www.biddingfortravel.com if you're looking at booking via priceline and want to get an idea of what price bids have been accepted in what cities, and for what hotels. It's a great resource so you don't waste time underbidding - or bid more than you have to, to get a good room.

I'd love to join you guys for Cleveland but since that's right before Philly, I'm gonna save my energy and travel money (I'm still hoping for a Philly/Baltimore/DC-area show in November/October, if I'm going to add another date to my itinerary...)

I would not suggest staying in Pontiac...I mean it is fairly safe...but there are seedy parts.

I would get as close to Auburn Hills as I could...there are many hotels in that region.

Thanks, DBMI.

I think Detroit may be off the board just cuz of logistics, but if it raises its head again, I'll keep that in mind.

At the very least, Cleveland rocks.

The palace of auburn hills is no where near detroit and their are plenty of nice hotels by The Palace that are not in Pontiac and the ones that are are at the northern (nice) part of Pontiac that borders Auburn Hills.

As stated, the sound is pretty darn good at the Palace. Saw The Who there recently and no echo or chamber sounds, acoustically perfect.

As Bob Segar said, " I was reading Rolling Stone word, and they said that Detroit audiances are the greatest rock and roll audiances in the world....I said to myself, shit, I've known that for 10 years".
"Is any body alive in here?"

You are so not making this easy. But I'm afraid getting to and from Auburn Hills might be too prohibitive this time 'round. Thanks for all the info though, folks!

I went there to visit someone a few years ago who showed me the Palace. At the time, I believe she joked if the Police ever reformed, that's where they would play should they come to Detroit. Little did we know then... Anyway, it looked like a great venue although it was definitely a trek to get to from the bus station and airport. I'll probably just hit the Cleveland show if I go.
