Skydoc: Thanks for taking care of business. I can only imagine that douche bag is too young and dumb to know anything about what it takes out there to do what so many drummers have tried and failed at. :!:
Regarding Neil Peart; he is suited to play those 20 minute long, unbelievably complicated compositions that Rush is known for. He does write all the lyrics and is Mr.Meter when it comes down to technical merit. I wouldn't compare his ability to Stewart's on ANY level. They both play very different kinds of music but collectively they both deliver an amazing performance with their respective bands. :D
It took me years to be able to appreciate drummers like Charlie Watts but that is criteria for another thread. Note to Ringo: quit fucking boring everyone! 8)

not to slam other drummers...but here I go...

deep down I have nothing against any musician...especially drummers.

I have the full DVD of The Last Waltz, with The Band and Neil Young, Dylan,Muddy etc.

well, in the extra's they have this goofy kinda "jam" for about 15 minutes and everybody kinda wanders in and starts playing...so here comes Ringo..and...his very first hit...he totally misses the snare and hits outside rim...CLICK !

Sorry ...but it was so weak. I mean I can't slam a guy from the Beatles I guess but...I don't think he was all that great. I will say a few tunes have some nice "abstract" fills, which I like...Sgt Pepper type thing.

I am not sure if it's even him sometimes.

...it sure is funny though.

For some reason methinks all of Ringo's compositions came straight from Paul or John, and maybe even George.

I'll say it- Ringo's a Monkey! Never liked him, like I will never like the caveman stylings of Lar Ulrich.

A true musician can appreciate musical talent when he sees it. Personal taste is one thing...but there is no denying the originality and musicality of someone like Stewart Copeland.

Comments like this say a lot about the person making them, so there is really no point in trying to argue with them.

This whole Peart vs. Copeland debate has always fascinated me. I like both of them, for very different reasons. To me, they are like opposite sides of a coin.

Both have created some really interesting and musical drum parts that have withstood the test of time. However, their Modus Operandi are very different. Neil likes to orchestrate his parts right down to the 64th note. Stewart prefers to just go for it and let the chips fall where they may. I attribute this largely to personality. Stewart is the hyperactive extrovert - Neil is more quiet, private, and introspective. Both men certainly aren't lacking in the chops department. I will say, however, that Stewart is probably the better improviser, although Neil is improving. Check out his "explorations" on his Anatomy of a Drum Solo DVD.

The only real criticism I have of Neil is that he's never been that great at anything requiring a swing feel. Hearing him play jazz reminds me of high school or jr. high kids just learning how to play a swing beat. Conversely, I think Stewart came out of the womb swinging.

So come on, folks. Appreciate them for what each has contributed to the instrument and let's put this one to bed, huh?

Sorry - Way too caffeinated and anxiously awaiting my 4th-5th grade chorus' performance tonight.

A wise man once said you can tell alot about a group by how they talk about other groups...ones doing well talk about groups they like...struggling ones about those they hate...same thing about musicians who 'once were' I guess...

It's kinda embarassing seeing the recent slew of legendary musicians speaking ill of the Police...I mean surely they *must* have something better to do than lob grenades...don't they? honestly?

I mean it takes some real stones and love for the music to descend from your throne in legendary rock-avatardom to actually going on tour again (my hypothesis on the money is that there are far easier ways to cash in on the 30 year anniversary that take 1/1000 the energy and committment of a year world-tour)...I mean you take yourself from the established ethereal legendary-beyond-reproach realm to the gritty realm of the rock band's reality/life once again: prone to the critics once again, comparisons with yourself 20 years before, all sorts of speculation, and so on...I mean you literally have to live up to your own legend...what a mind f that must be...why all the sour grapes and negative hypothesizations before they have even had half a chance...before even the first note of the f'in tour...is really mind boggling...

Anyone who has gone on that rocketship ride I would think would understand, but guess not, it seems...

What exactly is Ringo alleged to have said? Simply that the reunion was "boring"? What about it bored him, exactly?

I'm just not sure I buy this whole story, given that the only outlets running it appear to be online purveyors of showbiz gossip.

Zilboy: We're both on the same page on this one. I've heard some people refer to Neil Peart as being some kind of scientist or something but truth be told he puts his pants on one leg at a time just like Stewart, you, me, the queen of England and most everyone else. :!:
This debate does make for some interesting discussion. :D
My apologies if anyone is offended by my less than impressed opinion of Ringo. I will concede and say that he has some signature drum beats to his name, "Ticket To Ride" is unmistakable. 8)

Dive, to answer your question Ringo said that the opening of the Grammy's was boring...it's in the interview with Ringo in the current issue of Rolling Stone...

I know this because my car broke down this evening...10 mins. after we drove away from the mechanic after getting the ac "fixed" the whole thing just clunked out and wouldn't restart...we had to walk 5 miles home after they came and got the car and took it back to the shop...where we stopped at a BNN on the way and I looked through several of the music mags while in there <grin>

Woof! Do they not have cabs in your town, girl? Guess it's always good exercise. Sorry to hear about the car trouble.

Who knows what goes on in that goateed head Ringo's got. I'm still putting my money on a touch of professional jealousy. And the fact that Stewart has most likely snatched the 'best drummer of all time' mantle away from him, in the minds of some.

People love Neil Peart and I agree that he is technically amazing. However, he spends eons working out all of those parts whereas Stewart is more of a great feel player. I'd be happy to play like either of those guys, but I'd prefer to play in The Police. Rush is pretty pretentious in a college freshman kind of way that gets on my nerves.

Yeah, I remembered Rush when I was in college, but it didn't capture my attention like The Police.

Im concerned that this ended in some kind of fight.....whoa!!!

Am i right in thinking this was cos somebody essentially said 'my drummers better than your drummer'

hey i agree SC over NP anyday but fighting over it.....steady eddy!!!

peace guys.

Giovanni is correct....its odd isnt it that 'good' taste just always happens to be just the same as our own

so he likes neil peart more than stewart....means hes missing out on some great drumming.....maybe im missing out on some great drumming cos i aint really intrested in neil peart....ho hum.
