Ok so check it! I went ahead and cut up some of the recording of one of my practices. I present to you SpecialAnthony! Playing along to Driven to Tears and for you RUSH fans a little YYZ.

I thought I read somewhere that he did a bunch of fills for the ending and they picked the ones they liked the best.

Anyhoo, are we talking about the second fill? The triplets? I think that they are just your classic right-hand, left-hand, kick-foot, possibly with a bit of reverb? That's the way I always heard it.

The wild one on the fade-out is just single-stroke 5's on the snare and a bunch of 16th notes across the toms. Remember, Stew grew up with Billy Cobham, who is notorious for that kind of stuff. It's just a matter of getting the hands to pull it off (a little caffeine don't hurt once you hit your 40's ).

BTW, has anyone else ever noticed that Stewart has never, ever played a double-stroke roll?

I know, I totally missed my calling. The sad part is that this recording was back in Dec, about a year after I quit my band and moved 1500miles away. And what's even worse is that I don't think I have it as together now as I did back in Dec! I know it'll come back, I just wish I could find some people and the time to play with.

Thanks for the kind words (and the ego boost!). I know you guys are all awesome- come on! Who is our collective drumming idol?!?! I'd love to hear other drummers on here! If you have a 5th gen video iPod, all you need is a little Belkin voice recorder to get that quality. I was impressed to say the least when I hear how well it did, being pretty much point blank and two feet from the kit. I SOOOOOO wanna take it to the concert! I'm afraid it'll get confiscated.

..actually, it is progressing quite well.

Spec A! is right though, having a band improves you in a way that practicing doesn't.

I got to jam a few weeks ago as a three piece...really fun...been about two years since I did that. Hope to do it again soon.

Is it wrong to hate your job in every aspect...and just want to write and record and jam all day?

..if it's wrong then I don't wanna be right.

No it's not wrong at all- just goes to show the passion you have for drumming!

I'm actually trying to collaborate electronically with my old band mates. They can't find a drummer to replace me (so they say) and have some stuff written that they will record and upload. Then I can download and play along to althewhile recording it to send back to them. Song writing across 1500miles! All I need to do now is keep bugging them to get their butt in gear!

I still wanna hear Stewart's comments on how he played/recorded this song!!

I feel your pain, guys. I've been bandless for 2 years now. The plan is for the bass player and myself to put something else together, but he's got a lot on his plate right now. In the meantime, I'm playing every day, to maintain the callouses, but it can never replace playing in a band.

I'm happy, I have a great life, a fine family, a rewarding job, and yet - there's a small chunk missing, like the final piece in a puzzle. The picture's not complete without it.

Here's hoping we all find that missing piece soon, and give the King of Kinetic Ritual a reason to look over his shoulder!

God I could not agree more with that statement! Sigh. It's like you can't have it all, at least not in this part of my life. I had an awesome drumming life 5 years ago, mostly due to my awesome girl who pushed me for it. Then we get married, now we have an awesome family life, finally have a great house, finally have a great job, all the while the drumming thing slowly slipping further away. I haven't found that balance yet of it all.

this is a good discussion for drummers. We all have dreams and it's great when others support you. Even if you never become "a Star" or whatever you want to call the success, it is all about the journey. I think that is a great thing about music...describing a journey,emotional, physical,tough times, good times...whatever.

Dream on.

and of course..practice.

Spec A! - Cool that you are possibly recording over the technology airwaves. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be...fate does strange things sometimes, you may find yourself with some of your best work... 1500 miles apart! Maybe a "hit" will get you guys in the same room someday. Who knows?

speaking of a journey, funny how Stewart refers to his kit as his "chariot" or "hotrod"....now thats what you ride on a journey!...

...it's just that his is sparkly blue and mines kinda scratched and dented and red woodgrain...I still love my "Chariot".

Ahh, I was in the same boat as some of you guys for a long time. I was in 2 bands in my teens/early 20s. then came a job, apartment living, then marriage, then a house, then a kid. 'free time' became pretty scarce. but my daughter is nearly 5 and some of that free time came back in the last year, plus my job is reasonable. so back in december I went looking in the windows of the local drum shop for 'drummer wanted' signs, and hooked up with some guys who were already a going concern. Now I practice with them once a week for 3-4 hours with an eye on playing 'out' eventually, and it's fun. i got my mojo back!

having said that though, I cant say I dig the music we've been playing all that much (some good Cracker tunes, but beyond that it's not thrilling), plus almost every cover song idea i've brought in has been pushed aside, so I may be looking in that drum store window again soon.

That's the toughest part of this for me- I met what I feel is my musical soulmate on bass in my last band. To put it humourously- We're gay for each other we connected so well. I've never played with a bass player that could read me so well, and that I could read so well, and we just played so incredibly tight together. I swear he was my musical twin, even when it came to taste in bands. Our Guitarist/Lead singer and him met in college and played for like 4 years with another drummer before I came in and swept them off their feet. The Guitarist was okay at best, but man I tell you it was awesome playing with that bass player. I never enjoyed what we all created together so much than with any other band I've been in- that's why we're still gonna try to collaborate somehow. There was something special there, and I feel as if I'm going to have a real hard time finding that again (especially here in TX).

He's only the guy who is on-time, organized, knows the tunes, usually is the only one recording the jam or video or still pictures. Then he's the guy who makes copies for all the other fella's. He is the one pushing for more...c'mon guys.

It's been nine years since I last picked up the sticks.

Moved to a new country, got married, new house, kid etc.. Time flies.

Looking to get a guitar beginners pak soon. (Always wanted to learn never had the time.)

Hopefully get my boy interested enough so I get a kit a we can jam. (Father/Son bonding moment.)

All this talk is wetting my appetite
