THE IMPOSSIBLE TRIPLET IN "NO TIME THIS TIME"..HOW

Postby tigress on 16 Aug 2005 21:30

Don't other musicians overdub their voices and extra instruments, etc. in their music? So, why wouldn't Stewart do the same thing with drums?

On the Synchronicity album, it said "All noises made on this album were made by The Police." Well, the only way that could work is if they overdubbed stuff, like the piano in Every Breath You Take, for example, right?

Overdubs..

What about the hi hat rythm in "walking on the moon"? Does it have any special effect (delay or something?)

Please help since i'm trying to understand this for years...

Totally delayed :)

Ever listen to the B-side "I Burn For You" ? The end is just freaking awesome, but you can totally hear the delay- it's about a half beat behind, and they pan it back and forth between the left and right channels, so if you pan your balance to one or the other you can hear what he actually played. :) I've never been a fan of delays on drums, but Stewart is the only one that I've ever heard pull it off where it compliments the song and not over powers it. Prett sweet. :)

Thanks a lot Anthony. I will look out for the tune you referred.

I think the fill at the end may be a quad, that is instead of a single kick and triplet he does a double kick on the bass drum.

Sounded more like the "and a" part of a triplet, ala Bonham. In essence a triplet on the kick only the "1" is omitted on the kick and played with your hands where ever- in this case on the toms.

Maybe Stewart can let us know? :)

....hey! time to revive an old thread!

Since I'm getting the groove back practicing every night...I'm gonna work on those damn rolls at the end of "No Time".

...must work harder...

I like what you guys were saying about the Bonham style. I'm really gonna "super" listen to it and try to pick it out. I think you guys are right.

It's like a 30 second work out!
Cheers.

All of those fills at the end of 'No time' are really sweet

The patterns sound simple enough (except that last one), but i always guessed there was some overdubbing since it sounds like there are more drums being hit than stewart has arms :)
Thanks Stewart!

I just thought of a way to really help ...me!!! HA!

I have a voice recorder MP3 (like an ipod but has a speaker and a mic...get one! trust me) Well, after reviving this post I realized that I can load the tune into the player and it has a "slow down" feature...one or two times slower...I guess it's for dictation purposes but that will be great!

I'm gonna load it up tomorrow and slow it waaaay down...cause I know that I can't do it right now.

It's that beginning of the roll...the snare.."blurrat blurrat....dugga dugga dugga dugga". It's the "blurrat" part that is way to fast for me.

I hope everyone else understands my "Bongoisms"

I suck at those rolls...and Copie does it all the time.

Yea, I call him Copie when I talk drums now. heh, heh.

Don't tell me you can play like that SpecA....or I'll make up a new name for YOU!!!!!!!!!

Showoffweasils!!!
Cheers.

At one point in time... My chops aren't what they used to be. :(

I have a voice recorder for my iPod that does an AMAZING job at recording the drums w/o clipping. When I get some time I'll have to play along on another iPod, record it and post a link for all you drummers out there! :D

I can tell you what they did to achieve that "impossible" drumming on "No Time This Time". They basically overdubbed that same 16th note snare drum fill at the start of the song over the "normal" 8th note drumming used in the verses.
It's a great song and one of my favs to play.
Might even provide a midi audio sample if I have time. :P
