New Police Logos please!

New Police Logos please!

Postby Howstupidmrbates on 17 Apr 2007 19:23

Ok, I am of course a major fan....but....the band, or perhaps the record company, has been using the same set of tired logos for the past several releases. I think it's about time they commissioned an artist to design a logo that fits the 2007 version of The Police. Even the Best Buy sponsored logo is a tired rehash of the Synchronicity paint slash. C'mon guys. This makes me very worried about what we may see at the concession stands at the shows. I love the band forever, but I wouldn't pay $70 for yet another t-shirt with a Zenyatta cover or artwork like that on the EBYT DVD. Stewart - please read and consider! Maybe the band could have a contest or open submission for artwork. I'm sure I could come up with something! By the way....the clock is ticking until Dodger Stadium June 23rd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yo!!

I personally enjoy the old logo. There's just plain "old" and there's classic.

As a typographer I can say without fear of contradiction that the old logo is the most vivid, most easily recognisable and distinct of all.

Futura was one of the first sans serif typefaces to emerge in the 20s and remains a popular, yet not overly used face.

The GITM face is a nice bastardised version of Eurostile or Microstyle fonts and still remains relevant.

The Sync logo has dated terribly, though.

Boring enough for ya?

Hubby?!? Is that you?!?

At the risk of starting a Font Fight, I HAD to ask my book designer hubby (who can drive you nuts with his font IDing), and he agrees with HSMB that The Police could use a new logo.

I only asked him about the Futura logo (to save my sanity), and he agrees that Futura is clean and therefore never goes out of style. But he says that it has gotten lots of use in previous decades -- it's just that we don't often notice it because it's frequently used for small type.

His assessment is that Futura is too "colorless, rigorous, and geometric" to be representative of The Police. He says -- and yes, this is a quote -- "The Police span decades. Futura has lasted decades but doesn't span them."

When asked for a suggestion, he said he'll have to think about it. But if he comes up with anything in particular, I'll be sure to update. :D Feel free to womp his ass, Wombat -- I just couldn't resist asking. I should probably add that I kinda like the rigidity of the Futura logo because it plays up the institutional feel of the name as well as the irony of it; but it does have a bit of a timestamp to it.

Personally, I'd just be happy if we could please step away from the Synch/primary colors/brushstrokes theme.

Yeah, I'm thinking the Synch color splotches thing is so, uh, 1983.
This tour is a mega celebration of the anniversary our boys got together and blew the music world apart. So, I'm thinking a combo of the old and new would be in order. Here's my suggestion, use the GITM logo and merge photos of their current faces with the computerized faces of yesteryear. Cool, eh?

Of course, it's my idea and I'll get the credit. Don't infringe my copyright! To the powers that be: Make all checks payable to Me. I'll be in Wikipedia as the person who designed the new Police logo... I'll be on Conan... I'll get the best seats at any concert I want to go to....Stewart will want to post on MY forum...I may even find a hat to fit my rapidly inflating head.

I like the ghost logo too. For the start of every concert it would be cool if they had a large screen with a digital countdown. When it hits zero the digital faces appear in complete darkness with the feedback of sysnchonicity 2 in the background, then lights on and we're off!!

When I show them 'round my house to my bed
I had it made like a mountain rage with a snow white pillow for my big fat head
And my heaven will be a big heaven,
and I will walk through the front door.
BIG TIME . . . 8)
