TOP 20 drummers of all time!!

Postby howardhughes on 13 Apr 2007 09:26

Keith Moon.
Surely the greatest example of playing for the heart there ever has been.

I dont even want to go to the ' ...but technically he wasnt very good' argument. it seems to me totally irrelevant.

when you hear moon....he touches you you....he makes you smile and laugh out loud.....and without him the who would be just another band.

moon is a titan without whom the drummer would just be the bloke at the back.

I think the lack of technical ability argument washes away the moment you hear him.....it just doesnt matter.

I would listen to moon everytime over some dismal boring technician like dave weckl or something ( weckl is a great drummer but....im sure you get my point).

Glaring omissions...Buddy Rich, Carlton Barret (Upsetters/Wailers) and Steve White (Style Council/Paul Weller).

Also, Ronnie Tutt - Elvis' drummer in the Las Vegas era - was absolute quality too.

Cheers

I'm continuing this thread for hugely sentimental reasons - I was just today at the funeral service of my father, a tremendous jazz fanatic and drummer connoisseur. His number one favourite was always Buddy Rich, with Gene Krupa a close second. As a teenager I was not able to sell our Stewart to him, but as a sign of rebellion ( ) I used to tell him my favourite from the jazz genre was Joe Morello. All this is so far in the past I really need to go back to the vinyls and check him out...

In memory of my father I thank him for the rhythm gene (I'm sure there is one).

I'm sorry too- especially having that musical connection with him. :(

What do you all think of Chad Sexton? I wouldn't class him as one of the greatest of all time, just curious of your all's opinons. :)

So many thanks to you for your kind words, they really mean a lot to me today!
Not wishing to hijack the thread, it's just that love of rhythm was such a defining thing about my father that it does not seem inappropriate to remember him here today as well.
... and the beat goes on...

Truer words never spoken, hh.

Every time I watch a video clip of Moonie I just can't believe the sh** he's doing, it's so insane and his technique is just so "out there" and his own, but I love it. He could never have played with another band besides the Who, but he was the only drummer for them and truly someone who played from the heart, as you say.

My two cents...

1. Buddy Rich
2. Stewart Copeland
3. Elvin Jones
4. Vinnie Colaiuta
4. Dennis Chambers
5. Dave Weckl
6. Neil Peart
7. John Robinson
8. Steve Gadd
9. Steve Ferrone
10. Peter Erskine

If you don't know any of these names, you better look them up if you really want to know something about drumming.

I almost forgot one of my favourites....Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus. Seen them open for Rush about 15 years ago when they were promoting their "Sailing The Seas Of Cheese" abum. This guy is amazing :!:
Primus is quirky sounding and not everyones cup of tea (like Rush). They play in odd time signatures and Les Claypool's bass playing is extraordinary. :D
I can see why Stewart played with Les and Trey on their Oysterhead project. This was the last time I had seen Stewart perform live (fall 2001) and he was at the top of his game (as always!). 8)

What the hell does that mean?
